When will Bukkit be updated for Minecraft 1.5?

We have completed the update to Minecraft 1.5_02 (and have had it done for a while now) and are working out a few issues before we promote a recommended build. A TEST ONLY build is available but we highly recommend that you wait until we promote a Recommended Build before putting it on your production server.

You can find the latest test build on ci.bukkit.org. Please note, though, that if you don't already know how to get it, you probably shouldn't be using it. Only Recommended Builds have gone through extensive testing. Anything else could result in unforeseen problems like Bukkit eating your cake or your world. You have been warned.

    Common Problems/Questions:
What's the first build that works with Minecraft 1.5_02
The first CraftBukkit build that works with Minecraft 1.5_02 was made available 2 days ago and is build #689. However, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that if you are running the test builds, you always stay up to date as we usually fix bugs, exploits and improve stability.

I downloaded build 714 but got some other build!
You're probably reading the version string incorrectly.

    Here's an example version string:
    git-Bukkit-0.0.0-686-g71ef92a-b714jnks (MC: 1.5_02)

This version string is for build 714, as you can tell by the "b714jnks" at the end.

Whenever I use a plugin that changes blocks, I can't see the changes until I reconnect!
We had an issue with blocks not updating properly but this has since been fixed from build #707. This bug affected plugins that changed blocks in game, like WorldEdit.

Help! My console keeps getting spammed with this error whenever someone gets kicked or disconnects and it lags the server!
This is a bug we've fixed from build #701 onwards.

I can't build or destroy anything! Help!?
The common cause of this issue is a client mod called Single Player Commands, please try uninstalling all your client mods and seeing if this fixes the issue. If this is the case, then it isn't a Bukkit issue and you should contact the author of the mods you use.

Every time I connect to the server and load a sign, the client crashes. What's wrong?
Minecraft 1.5 has added limits for sign text. Plugin developers commonly used longer sign text to store extra data or add colours to signs. This is no longer possible, so we now cut off any line in a sign longer than 15 characters (as of build #712).

I get kicked when flying and am told that flying hasn't been enabled on this server. How do I enable flying?
Minecraft 1.5 added anti-flying checks. You can enable flying by setting allow-flight=true in server.properties.

Whenever I try to send a long message in chat, it gets cut off at roughly two lines.
A limit on chat has been added with Minecraft 1.5. This is one of the issues we're hoping to address before we promote a Recommended Build.

Help! When I use the CLI arguments to set ports (or any setting), the server always starts up on 25565 or ignores the setting!
There was a bug that prevented the server from reading settings passed through CLI arguments. This has since been fixed from build #706 onwards.

The easiest fix for most problems is to update to the latest Bukkit test build.

As is the case with every Minecraft update, we saw our usual influx of extra traffic from people wondering if we have a build of CraftBukkit working with the Minecraft update seconds after release (seriously). Usually, you'd see a pretty standard post from me stating we're working on an update and providing the usual advice that you aren't forced to update. However, this time there was a distinct lack of communication from the team regarding the status of the update, other than the usual "we're working on it". Couple this with the slow development occurring lately and we can forgive people for posting the expected "is Bukkit dead?" or "what's going on?" posts. I hope this post will explain everything.

Will there be a CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.5?
Given the reports of showstopping bugs present in 1.5, there's a high chance a new bugfix update for Minecraft will be out tomorrow or even several times this week. As a result, it is unlikely we will be releasing a 1.5 compatible build and, instead, will be waiting for something stable to work with.

Due to the nature of the project and the methods we use to provide Bukkit for Minecraft, any update - no matter how small - requires us to figure out the mapping of obfuscated classes and update our code. This takes a lot of time and work, so hopefully you understand our decision.

Having said all this, we recommend that you stay on 1.4 for a while until the patch storm subsides if your server depends on Bukkit.

Further, I wanted to apologise for the lack of communication regarding this update. I was really hesitant announcing this since it would only serve to disappoint and annoy people, however, I noticed quite a few supportive comments on here and IRC that pushed me to post this announcement because the people that have supported us through everything deserve it.

Why are things so quiet? Why is the update taking so long?
Before I answer this, I think it is appropriate to cover what usually happens when we're aware of an update coming soon. Whenever we recieve word of a Minecraft update (which, contrary to popular belief, is generally the same time as everyone else), we place all development in the Bukkit project under a code freeze to prepare for the update and make things easier. That being said, last week thursday we were expecting a Minecraft update and appropriately placed the project under a code freeze. Unfortunately, the update was delayed and pushed to the next week, resulting in a much longer code freeze than normally occurs. Naturally, this lead to activity within the project seeming critically lower than it really was and prompted some people to post the inevitable "what's going on?" thread.

On top of the code freeze, we're working on some larger changes to Bukkit or CraftBukkit that require quite a bit of time to complete and will only be commited to the public code when they are ready. Quite often you'll find that, while you don't see any updates, we definitely are still working hard programming awesome things and appreciate your patience and support.

So why is this update taking so long? After we had updated for Minecraft 1.4, we came across some annoying chunk related issues and bugs that were incredibly difficult to pinpoint due to confusion with the new obfuscated names mappings (d -> c and c -> d). Naturally, these kinds of issues were unacceptable for the project and we immediately got to work on improving our update process to avoid issues of this nature in the future. While I think we can all agree with this decision, the unfortunate result is the delay we're currently facing since we're not yet done improving the process. The good news is, we're nearly done improving our update handling process and the wait will definitely be worth it come future updates.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

It's not a simple as that, as the code has been obfuscated. Let them take their time, not rush. 1.5 Is a good example of bad things that happen on a rushed update.

I know right? it's like, dude, you have hit a goldmine here, you have a game everyone loves and you're getting rich off it, why be a retard and stop updating and fixing it? hire more damn programmers for godsake if you need to @_@

Everyone needs to stop worrying about minecraft 1.5. I stayed on 1.4 for a while then updated to mess with the rails and now minecraft is being so retarded that everytime i place a block it crashes. Be smart and do not update because is so freaking buggy you cannot place a single block or get on your updated vanilla server. This is utterly pathetic that notch would such a buggy update. They need to calm down and take their time with their updates. No minecraft today :/ ... at least....

notch needs to grow up and handle this like a real business. he reminds me of my boss in so many ways...hes has this local computer shop for 21 years and it goes no where because he doesnt give a fuck. guaranteed if he keeps this up it wont last long. how can you have a game released in beta for over a year?

  12. It hasn't been in BETA for over a Year lol
Also actually Managing 2 Games now keeping track of their Development as well as developing one of them on top of that running mojang and keeping the team together and getting them to give him updates in meeting in the morning of what they actually got done the day befor and what they are doing that day. On top of that Reading emails and trying to sort threw thousands of them a day amoungst Accepting and declining meeting and interviews with Outsiders and a hell load more also dealing with YOU whining bunch of players no wonder he makes mistakes ect ect ect

Untill you know what Running Mojang is like yourself (Which you wont) Quit your disrespect towards Notch, dont like it? Cant handle a Few Bugs? Then dont play.

I have a simple question to everyone complaining about him releasing something incomplete when in actuality YOU ARE THE BETA TESTERS in this experience. Do you expect a 100% working game when he puts the stuff out there for you to test? Not saying he couldn't have alpha tested a tad bit more. But seriously? Have none of you beta tested any game? How many of the people complaining even send bug reports on what they find? If your not going to help in the process then there is a button to uninstall and wait for the official game.

On that note: Enjoy the game. Waiting with baited breath for the bukkit update so I can host my sever once again. Great job and keep up the good work guys!

You all bitch and moan like 5 year olds..

Ill be over there on 1.4, rule of thumb is to NEVER update for a few days. (Notch made it possible to avoid updates, you know :D)

I would have much rather they spend that week bug-testing and not developing those features that I know I'LL never use (the powered rails are WEEK man :p)

I understand that I won't know what running Mojang is like, however it is obvious that the 1.5 update was NOT tested satisfactorily internally, and was rushed out.
After the supposed fix (1.5_01), smp almost completely broke. I can't be sure, but that defiantly was not tested enough either.
Mojang is a proper company now, and should stop it's rushing and silly target setting. I understand it is a big job, but going off to play a game with no regards to a just pushed major update is nothing but silly and unprofessional.
As a network technician, I would never apply a major change to our system without testing on a small network first, and also would never roll out the update globally and just dissapear straight after.

He completed Portal 2 in 7 hours, He sent out a patch the next day. If he hadn't have told people he was going to play Portal, no one would have even noticed.

The moral of the story is, calm the fuck down people.

Funny, we're not treated like beta testers by Mojang.

    Actual testers would get:
    • Information about features (a complete feature list) prior to release.
    • There would be documented release dates...
    • There would be documented testing procedures and functionality... not community driven "this is how this works" wikis
    • There would be a fixed product roadmap...
    • There would be a bug tracking system; Not just a "support question box" and a wikipedia page that lists Version History.
I'm typically an optimist, but if Notch and Mojang know what's good for them, they'll nip this sloppy code release stuff now before they break something substantial that corrupts worlds (I think they already did that... in 1.4) or causes them to do a full scale rollback of the client and server.

Daniel Kaplan needs to sit down with Notch and have a serious adult to adult talk.

I'd rather have a lack of features than flaky or buggy features...

As one of the many who run a CraftBukkit Server with Plugins I think we know how annoying it is for the server admins and the players to try to sort out all unknown problems with plugins and half-baked features.

You are right, but posting messages about it and shoving it peoples faces you arn't fixing problems for petty reasons is silly.

Moral of the story is, if you arn't going to do something straight away, don't be a moron to people and tease them about their struggle.

I agree the shitstorm wouldn't be as bad if he hadn't said about portal 2, but he knew how the MC community would react.

Stop moaning about Mojang in this thread. Next post off topic, i.e. not talking about bukkit or asking a question about bukkit, will be deleted and their owner dealt with appropriately.

    Alright, fair enough.
Have the team decided yet whether to use 1.5_02 for their latest build?
  24. Offline

It is true that beta testers are treated like that for major game development companies. I am not defending his lack of treatment however I am just saying that people never look to consider, "Is the game still being developed? Or is this the finished product." Changes will be made. Move on and help make it a better game overall. Don't attack the creators or those helping to progress it. If you have a problem, simply state the problem and ask if anyone else is having the issue. Or read the forums to see if anyone has had the same issue as you and already posted, add a reply about how you have the same and move from there.

i have a question why can't we respectively have like a notice example: we(the bukkit dev team) have started working on the next bukkit update for mc 1.5_02?

i just want to know if bukkit devs have started coding im not asking when it will be done i just want to know if it has begun or if they are still waiting for another update?

Knowing they've began will do you no good. You can't do shit with something they just started working on. So no, this won't happen. Nor will we be giving out progress reports.

knowing weather theve started or not can give u some idea of when we can get a 1.5 version.
idk about the person who asked this originally, but im wondering the samething. and it would help if i knew if u were atleast working on it yet. especially to a guy with ocd

I understand we don't need to the second progres reports, but at least the knowledge that it is in progress would stop most people from asking about it. We are not asking for it double time, or asking to sacrifice quality, but a simple "We are working off 1.5_02" would reassure the 10% of people remaining in this thread who are not bitching about Mojang's ethics.
