I have a couple questions on port fowarding. My router says my ports are forwarded, but port checker websites say they arent. People have connected before, so I dont see what changed. Ip routing is enabled. I turned firewall off. And Im pretty sure I have a static ip.

very cool of you too offer some advice and help, quick question, have you any experience with whitelists?

i currently run a 100slot server, now we have never filled it, we hit 71 players once, since then we avg between 20 - 35 players online, we do not, nor ever have used a whitelist, since we have no whitelist we get our fairshare of idiots...

Now im looking to grow the player base a lot, but i am also considering a whitelist to try and improve the quality of users, but i dont want it to have a negative impact on the server traffic.

I have heard tho that it can increase traffic, via posts on say official minecraft forum, having people reply to the post with applications then bumps your thread and it snowballs. So in a nutshell, have you any experience/opinion on whitelisting? and best ways to do it?

    Thanks.

In general, people seem to want something more if you have a decent organization that's highly selective. I've personally experienced a time where I was very selective with the people I let in to my creative world and watched the server grow (both in size and applications). But this method only works if you have something to back up the high standards that you are setting.

So in a nutshell, yes. But it depends on how you want to advertise your server. Make it unique, clean (if creative AND if survival) and people of high calibers will naturally come because of how complex and organized your server is.

So you would infact recommend going whitelist? I have some ideas already on how to streamline my server in terms of organization, so i think i shall at least do a whitelist trial period.

thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

If you'd rather not alienate the public so much, there are other ways to "filter the dumb."

I recommend reading this thread: http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/keep-your-server-idiot-free-a-no-whitelist-foolproof-method.27045/

Why thank you for adding me Mr. Man! Well heres a little bit about yours truly:
I've been running a Bukkit server since March-April first on a vmware ESXi Ubuntu, then an ESXi CentOs 5.5 and now a stand-alone CentOs 5.5 server. Just recently I've started plugin developing and I currently have one plugin waiting approval (Bazooka v.0.2). And another still in development (RedFire - Redstone fireworks). I am a website developer and an avid coder, and I know my way around both Windows and Linux but prefer Linux. I'm just starting to learn java so dont nail me with too many plugin questions...ill try my best though! O and one more thing, when making my Bukkit account I screwed up my birthday, I'm actually 15 not 25 :)
Enough about me, lets get to some questions!

Honestly what Mr. Man suggested is probably the way to go. I have a default "no build" group for anyone who joins the server and I have a website for my server that has a register service built into it. I just put a few simple questions into it. (first name, ign, role you want to play, what you want to do for the server and a silly question: if you were stuck in a bare white walled room w/ nothing but your bare hands what would you do) That last one has gotten quite a few funny responses. After I review the application I usually just move the user from a "no build" perm group to a basic group with build rights. You could also put a list of rules into the application kind of like a Terms of Service so they have to accept them to apply for build rights. Also having them on a website to register allows you to advertise a donation program or server news. There are also TONS of griefing loggers and things like that but with 70+ people that could be hard to manage. I defiantly dont think that you should leave build rights to new users. If anything just use a plugin like WelcomeMe to tell new members to register. But that's just my opinion! Hope it helps!

Mr. Man would you mind checking this problem out? Its got me stumped. I think the poster is from somewhere in Asia (screen shot has Chinese-like symbols) but the problem boils down to this: He uses PEX and only Admins can place water from buckets. Anyone can pick up water but only admins can place it...I'm more of a permissions than a PEX user but nothing looks wrong w/ the file...the only other thing I can think of is that non-admins aren't ops and cant place items within the spawn area-which seems very unlikely! heres the post: http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/i-have-problem-used-bucket-in-server.33869/#post-624201

    1. He's Korean.
    2. He needs to disallow water placing using WorldGuard. His setup looks correct.

Please help. I have a problem with BB I need help fast too. I recently realised I had an outdated version of BB I deleted everything BB related and installed the newest version. However. This didnt work I got tons of [SEVERE] errors. I tried switching back to the old version renaming BigBrother.example.yml and editing but nothing worked. Heres some extra info.

I'm not 100% sure what to think of the error, but this is what I'm guessing this is where your problem is.

The most recent BB build removed H2 support. I that means BB now only supports MySQL. This means you need to setup a mysql server and create a database for block logging, and then configure BB to work with your MySQL database.

Since you will lose your block history, if you were using H2, I recommend switching to HawkEye. Here is a guide to install MySQL and HawkEye. Don't give players appropriate permissions for HawkEye, if you switch.

    Hope this helps,
    Cheers

Hello, I have been using GroupManager for my permissions for a very long time while running my server. However seeing that it has lost support to be updated properly... I am having issues with it doing its thing correctly as expected... Therefore having no experience with any other permissions handler, I am asking for help in setting up something else to take GroupManagers place. Especially that I have seen no permissions handler to be marked 1060 compatable as of yet unless I have made a mistake, someone please help me! Thnx :)
