Outdated plugins ?

  1. Hey all,

So as a server owner i'm just wondering whether or not outdated plugins actually use up more RAM than updated ones ?

So what i'm wondering is, do outdated plugins or outdated versions of plugins cause lag and a higher use of RAM ? Take lockette for example, they haven't updated the plugin for a little while now, yet it still works fine in 1.6, what i'm wondering is whether or not using outdated versions or plugins that don't update regularly actually causes lag or higher RAM usage, and whether using plugins that don't update any more but still work fine causes the same thing ?

Just a random question, just for my reference in case it actually does in that case i'll be making some changes to my plugin usage! I could see using say outdated or inefficient ways of doing things in the plugin itself could cause some sort of errors ?

    Thank You :)

Usually the difference is barely noticeable. Sometimes it is the case that memory issues are fixed with updates, sometimes it's the case that there's a memory issue in a newer build.

  3. Thanks for the reply,

    So could i ask,

What's your opinion on using plugins that don't update so much..

Do you think that it will be best to shoot for plugins that are maintained and updated, and if you say that they should be updated, how often do you think they should be updated (I.e. every update etc..).

I want to find out what the best plugins to shoot for, part of it is picking the well 'built' ones, I'd rather use a plugin that works perfectly and does what i need instead of having a plugin that does both of that and uses up more RAM than need be.

    Thank You :)

It depends on the plugin. If written well and is fairly self-contained, an old plugin should work fine. I run four plugins that are over a year old. Some types of plugins are even better when they're this reliable and consistent. Other plugins need to be updated on every single update. For sensitive plugins like that, you'll want something that is maintained very well.

The age of a plugin should not affect its RAM usage.

Redbearz1 I have a plugin that hasn't been updated since Dec. 2011, still works fine ;)

  6. Thanks for your replies guys,

I'll stick with the plugins like lockette then, was just wondering about where or not i was wasting away RAM with old plugins, i'll be removing some plugins from my server soon anyways :)

    Thank You :)
