Mojang have just released an update to Minecraft, bringing us to 1.2.4.

This update is primarily a bug fix release but does include some nice improvements as well:
    Fixed:
    • Made placing half blocks on existing half blocks (to make a full block) easier
    • Limit framerate on menu screens, no longer uses 100% cpu and make my computer melt
    • Fixed fatal crash for converted worlds to anvil, when there’s blocks at max height
    • Fixed an old bug with signs clearing text while you’re editing them in SMP
    • Fixed crash when logging in while there are blocks at maxheight at spawn
    • Fixed TNT ghosts in multiplayer
    • Fixed storage minecarts dropping enchanted items
    • Fixed crashes on invalid server addresses when joining a server
    • Fixed entities being uninteractable if they existed at login (Multiplayer)
    • Fixed dupe exploit with paintings
    • Fixed furnaces and dispensers dropping enchanted items
    • Fixed the “flickering” of chat as it vanishes off the screen
    • Fixed text rendering over items in the container screens
    • Fixed exploit with jungle saplings (turns other saplings into jungle ones)
    • Fixed launcher opening minecraft dir if the path contains a space
    • Fixed an off-by-one lighting bug
    • Fixed block transmuting (turning one block into another via pistons)
    • Fixed placing mushrooms in daylight, where they can’t survive
    • Fixed redstone lamps dropping powered block items when destroyed while on
    • “save-all” (server) now works even when you have toggled “save-off”
    • Fixed turning half-blocks into full-blocks while you’re standing on them
    • Fixed seed displaying in F3 debug when the seed is unknown (multiplayer)
    • Fixed villager texture changing clientside per profession
    • Fixed falling off ledge corners while holding shift
    • Fixed players falling when reconnecting to servers where they were previously flying
    Added:
    • Chat history and much better chat editing
    • A few new decoration blocks
    • “Back” and “Quit” buttons to OutOfMemoryScreen
    • Made cats more realistic (read: probably annoying). I hope it’s enough to cancel out any joy you may receive from the previous feature!
    • Added a “minimal” debug menu for testing with. Shift+F3 to hide the graphs.
This is just a short announcement to let you know that we are aware of this and are working on it as I type this. Please note: Minecraft 1.2.4 has bumped the protocol version, so it is incompatible with 1.2.3.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Yea, but it still shows 1.1-R6 on the main page. Can easily confuse people.

    frog

1.1-R6 is the most recent Recommended Build.
1.2.3-R0.2 is the most recent Beta Build.
1.2.4-R0.1 is the most recent Development Build.

It's really not that hard to understand.

It just involves being able to understand and read the written word in English.

The front page downloads come under the heading 'Recommended Builds'.

I know, just assuming for those that arent used to the format of the site. They just need to sit back and wait a month for the Recommended to be done is all.

i guess its time to trash bukkit, and start using vanilla, since bukkit "as prediected" comes out 1-2 weeks before a official mc update.. dang, had high hopes.

    Don Redhorse

well just to condense the posts here:

    a) Dinnerbone did a lot of the fixes of MC and wasn't working on Bukkit during that time
    b) Software Development Process http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_development_process and Software Release Life Cycle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle and Software Revision numbers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_versioning are 3 things Mojang and Bukkit has to learn, even if they use Agile Devlopment, Scrum or any other approach.
    c) Bukkit can't update at the same time as long Mojang is not giving them the full code already before they release the official version.
    d) Plugins will only break if bukkit breaks them, so yes they could break if there changes between an RB and the new version which did break plugins (like the new event system). Otherwise depending on the functionality of the plugin you will miss some stuff perhaps if the plugin wasn't updated (like give commands not knowing the new blocks etc).
    e) And if you didn't notice it did already start what a lot of people where concerned about. The 4 members of the bukkit team who did join mojang working their ass off but not being able to handle the double load of coding for mojang and bukkit.

And now to the part people should be really pissed off about... not the other stuff a lot of people posted:

There was NO need to implement a breakage in protocol AFAIK... my guess this breakage in protocol comes from implementing new features (chat) in the 1.2.x Builds...

IF they would have only added bug fixes (like they should have if you read stuff about standard software development processes and life cycles) they wouldn't have broken connectivity between server and client.

    1.2.4 is a 1.3 really.

I think a lot will change when the Mojang API comes out and Bukkit is no more... but up to that date a lot of stuff need to be fixed, not only bugs, but also interaction with the community, the developers and the server admins.

Or does anybody of you guys know the issue / bug support system of mojang?

ok.. so that means we will get 1.2.5, 1.2.6, 1.2.7,.... 1.2.99 with new features which will break stuff OR they will step back from this 1.3 announcement.

Well... just hope it will not take up to next year to have a developer eco-system in place, because I don't see any forums, bug tracker etc yet for the mojang api at mojang.

I have emailed this to Notch and asked him to come respond to this forum. I'd like Notch to keep in mind that there were 133,089 downloads of merely the beta of bukkit 1.2.3 alone. This is not a small community that he can just ignore. That means the number of users playing on those servers is exponentially larger than this. And, there are still server admins and users that have been holding out for a stable release build.

I strongly believe that Notch does not like Bukkit and never has. He derided the Bukkit team and their design ideas and process when he visited them long before they were hired. I think that he pushes for these kinds of releases in the hopes to kill off Bukkit by eroding the number of servers relying on it. I've taken down my plugin's download in protest. As a minecraft player, server admin and plugin developer I'm just as angry as the rest of you. Let's send a message to Mojang that we're not going to take it anymore. Boycott all of their products until they give their players some respect! I think all plugins should take their downloads down and put up this protest. Show them we aren't going to be ignored anymore:

ATTENTION: IN PROTEST OF THE WAY MOJANG AND BUKKIT ARE HANDLING UPDATES AND FAILING TO KEEP BOTH THEMSELVES AND PLUGIN DEVELOPERS AWARE OF IMMINENT RELEASES OF A NEW MINECRAFT VERSION THAT BREAKS EVERYTHING I HAVE DECIDED TO NO LONGER PROVIDE THIS PLUGIN. THE UPDATE TO MINECRAFT 1.2.4 FROM 1.2.3 SHOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER COORDINATED AND NO SERVERS OR PLUGIN DEVELOPERS SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEFT BEHIND AT THE MOMENT OF ITS RELEASE. THE SAME CAN BE SAID OF THE MOVE TO 1.2.2. INSTEAD MOJANG HAS YET *AGAIN* LEFT MANY SERVERS IN THE DARK. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE AND IT IS ERODING OUR COMMUNITY. THIS IS PROOF NOTCH SIMPLY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT BUKKIT OR OUR USERS. WE WANT PLUGIN DEVELOPERS TO HAVE ONLINE MEETINGS WITH MOJANG AND THEIR TEAM BEFORE RELEASE AND COORDINATE RELEASES! MOJANG NEEDS TO STOP RELEASING CLIENT UPDATES UNTIL AFTER THE BUKKIT SERVER CODE AND PLUGINS ARE READY FOR USERS. PLACE THIS NOTICE ON YOUR PLUGIN PAGE AND REMOVE THE PLUGIN DOWNLOAD UNTIL MOJANG MAKES AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THEY ARE GOING TO WORK WITH THE BUKKIT COMMUNITY AND NOT AGAINST IT. FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT OF OUR USERS, SERVER ADMINS AND DEVELOPERS TO BE TREATED WITH SOME RESPECT!

I call on Notch to respond to this.

All users, server admins and plugin developers need to contact as many plugin developers as you can and please ask that they post this statement on their plugin page! Let them know you want a reaction from Mojang, that you want them to cut this out and give us a sane development model with minimum impact on users and server administrators!

NOTE: I have my plugin working on bukkit dev build 1.2.4 today, but this is my point! If bukkit devs and plugin devs had all been given a chance to test their code end users could have been given a clean update that breaks nothing and just works. The fact that Mojang feels it can release an update first and not have to worry about the rest of us is proof they do not care. Everyone should boycott Mojang until they reverse the way they are handling this! There's no reason for this nonsense.

There is no reason the 1.2.4 client release couldn't have been made available AFTER bukkit had a stable server build of 1.2.4 available. The bukkit team is now working at Mojang and this should have been DUH 101 for both them and Notch!

I see Bukkit team is working hard.

Does someone pay for their work? No?

They give us their free time? Yes?

So, let them work and wait for results with patience. No need for rapid unnecessary actions.

Time will show. The server with Bukkit or the vanila server with API made by Bukkit people, it is even for me. Most important is to have possibility for modding the game.

    1. Notch isn't even working on minecraft anymore.
    2. Would you rather have them not update mc for 8 months?
    3. They just joined mojang, give them some time to straighten things out.
    4. If they would wait for bukkit and its plugins to update, they could wait very long since there wouldn't be any urgent need for updates.
    5. Removing your plugin will be more inconvenient than helpful.

Wait, you actually believe that? To be honest, Mojang have no obligation to Bukkit to let them update before they release an update to the client, regardless of how popular it is. It is a third party modification to a game server. Yes, the core bukkit team is now part of Mojang, but as it isn't an official Mojang product, they can't rely on the unobsfucated code.

    Also, See this:
    http://twitter.com/#!/Dinnerbone/status/182046273011060736
    and this:
    http://twitter.com/#!/Dinnerbone/status/182046856287756289

They obviously would not have updated the protocol version for absolutely no reason. Those changes were necessary - they were hoping for 1.2.3 compatibility. The bukkit team WERE AWARE that the update was coming (and so was anyone else who follows Mojang on twitter). I think you need to get a tin foil hat if you still believe the stuff that you posted.

To server admin complaining.. Why don't you keep a 1.2.3 version on your server? You may link a web embeded 1.2.3 client on your server's forum page to ease your players manipulations, or let them download a batch script that substitute the mc.jar file in the appdata folder.

Anyway, as often in life, willing to ride the wave at the really edge may result in some disapointments.. ..which is especially true in tech and software domains. Every system admin in the world knows that..
Then I suggest, as said by a hung man, to "Always look at the bright side of life!"
Everyone here should keep in mind that Moj&Bukk dev team really do a great job to provide us a very cool game. I'm sure they only have in mind to get things better for us. More content, more features, less bugs ...more fun!!!
    Be patient.

Mojang is in full control of how and when they force a client update to all users. They did not even wait for 1.2.4 dev builds to start showing up on dl.bukkit before they pushed out a client patch for vanilla, let alone allow a beta to form. It is clear we are considered second rate citizens.

And, for those who are stating that we do not matter because we are using an unofficial server. We all paid for Minecraft and we've been happily playing it, and then something like this happens over and over.

And, now that the bukkit team is getting paid to work on this and they have access to Mojang vanilla code now, there is no reason they couldn't have delayed the client patch long enough for a proper release across the board so hundreds of thousands of server admins didn't suddenly lose all their users. To allow this to happen again after they just experienced the heartache and gnashing of teeth that was 1.2.2 can only mean that Notch waved his bejeweled hand and forced them to push out the update against their will. ***proudly dons the tin foil hat***

And, a response to those of you who are saying people can just stay on previous versions of the client. We don't control what users do, and users seem to be always clicking that Yes button in the client update. Asking them to move back a version is like pulling teeth and never pans out. So, our servers are all empty except for the ones who take the risk of running off the most recent dev builds (like me). A lot of server admins wait for a beta or for a stable release, and you can't fault them for not wanting to use alpha software. Also, it breaks all of our plugins and we have to start over from scratch, and we just got done becoming compliant with 1.2.3.

It isn't fair to users, server admins, or plugin developers. And, you shouldn't have to put up with it.

You realize you're looking for a chicken to be hatched before the egg has been laid, right? You can't release CB without Minecraft already being released, because CraftBukkit uses the Minecraft released code. However, now that Mojang is working on an API that will compete with/replace Bukkit, you'll see one release instead of a release from Mojang followed by a release from Bukkit. Second rate citizens?

Not sure who's saying we don't matter. I'd say the Bukkit coding team being hired by Mojang clearly shows the opposite.

You're confusing Bukkit with Mojang. Mojang will release an API that will compete with Bukkit. Bukkit is still the same entity they were a year ago, the devs getting hired by Mojang does not change Bukkit - it changes Mojang. Also, you're again looking for a chicken before the egg has been laid.

Notch/Mojang hasn't held a gun to anyone's head. So nothing was forced upon anyone. You can easily still run the 1.1-R8 build. You choosing to update your server is entirely your choice, and not the fault of anyone else.

I tell my users to not upgrade their client until I say the server is ready to go. I cannot control my users, but then again, I don't need to. My server provides an experience worthy to return to. I have yet to lose a user due to not upgrading my server fast enough. They all come back for more. If people cannot join my server because they updated, they'll learn not to update as fast next release.

    Well said TnT

This happens every time there is a Minecraft update users and server owners get crazy. I see some server owners are surviving on donations from players. Interesting the idea of getting people to pay you (some server owners) for a game they paid for already.

I do want to echo the idea they players will come back and play if you have something worth coming back for.

Edit: Heck the main Bukkit team was only hire a few weeks ago. So what is to be expected.
