Yes, being a plugin dev is a lot of work, yes users, especially clueless ones are a problem. The only other idea I had was to take bug reports out of the hands of users. Don't listen to user bug reports - add internal monitoring to your plugin, send data back to a website and then use automatic updating to correct your plugin as needed. Intrusive - yes, but also relatively stupid-proof. That may be overkill for small projects though.
