I played minecraft heavily up until 2 years ago with a big server running. I was thinking about starting one up again but i'm confused if bukkit is still the way to go about it.

I tried months ago now and was directed to spigot i was going to go there first but this forum seems still active.

So basically, is bukkit still the best to run minecraft servers these days or has another taken over.

Bukkit is pretty much what it always was.

Spigot on the other hand is more customizable if you know what you're doing. If you know how to tweak it you can see great improvements through spigot on your CPU and RAM usage.

If you want to just create a small server open on the weekends for you and your friends it's safer to run a Bukkit server. If you're looking to host a 24/7 server for many players it pays to have spigot to help save your memory for when it's needed.

You can read more on it but that's the basics of it.

The Bukkit team has stopped making CraftBukkit.

The Spigot team makes an (unofficial) version of CraftBukkit 1.8.8 as well as Spigot 1.8.8. They are preparing to release a 1.9 version of each.

I run the CraftBukkit 1.8.8 from the Spigot folks, and it works fine. Unless you need/want the Spigot features, I would suggest running it. You need to build it yourself by following some simple instructions:
