Plugin Authors: How to hook into Permissions

Permissions 2.x is being discontinued! 3.0 can be found HERE!!!

I am discontinuing Permissions 2.x and leaving the project. Permissions is not going away though! Since 2.6 I have been working closely with another developer and added them to the team. For the past several version they have not only been assisting with 2.x but also doing a lot of the development of much anticipated 3.x. rcjrrjcr will be taking over as lead developer of Permissions from 3.x forward. I have full faith in them and after working closely with them on the development on the last few version and the next major version I feel that I am leaving this project in more than capable hands. I put way to much work into this project to just leave it with anyone, and this is one of the few programs that I am incredibly proud of.

Many people will probably wonder why I am leaving again after taking over the project just a few months ago. I could quote drama and headaches, of which there were quite a few with this project. Unfortunately real life happens. Many people already know that I have been having medical issues here lately. Unfortunately while they have gotten better, they have not gone away. This coupled with other real life commitments, going to school full time, and starting up my own company, I am currently in the process of being laid off from work. At this point I have so much stuff going on in my life and am being pulled in so many directions that I am not able to get any work done on anything. This has lead to me missing commitments and letting people down on multiple things.

Permissions is also a very high maintenance plugin that requires a lot of attention and time. Right now I am not able to devote that time and do not feel it is fair for me to try to continue to be the lead developer on it. I had originally thought that adding other members to the team would be helpful, but unfortunately this just lead to frustration for them and myself as I just was not able to commit to the project enough. Hence, 3.0 has been rewritten almost exclusively by rcjrrjcr with minimal contributions by myself.

At this point I will be stepping away from the project to focus more on real life and to try to free up some time for other projects and to work with more individual like the wonderful HeroCraft Coding team to fulfill some commitments that I made to them a long time ago and sadly did not come through on. I feel that this is the best for all involved, both myself and the other Permissions developers, as well as the community who deserve someone who can contribute more time and attention to them and supporting them. I do not want to see Permissions end up like many other plugins with an absentee programmer and just slowly wasting away from a great plugin with a lot of potential to a headache with no support.

I will still be active in the community, just not as much as not in the same way. I'm sure my server will be more than happy to have their head admin back and active again as well.

    Thank you and happy gaming.

        • Fix for cache problems
    • 2.6
      • Pulled in commits by rcjrrjcr
      • Fixed versioning. Last version should have technically been 2.6
      • Fixed invalid config file being written
      • Fixed erroneous conversion message.
    • 2.5.5
      • Updated to be compliant with CB600+
      • Further Maven Integration and Autobuilding
      • Better handling of configuration file errors.
        • If you do not have a world config file for the default world at startup it will now look for config.yml
        • If it cannot find that it will look for world.yml instead in case you named it that when that is not what is in level-name:
        • It will rewrite the config file to be the proper name. At this time it does not delete the old one though.
      • Removed defunct public abstract calls. If your not using the right one by now you should be shot anyway.
    • 2.5.4
        • Added Command aliases for perms and pr
        • Changed the way directories are handled.
        • Stopped it from creating an empty <world>.yml file in base directory

    • 2.5.2
      • Added more instructions to the included config file within the plugin
      • Added a check that will use the default world permissions if a world specific config file cannot be found.
      • Added a function to get only the group that a player is assigned to without checking for group inheritance.
      • Added a change to colorize() to fix it hopefully not adding an extra unneeded ascii character and thus creating a linebreak/color switch issue
      • Removed permissions.info as it was not needed and was a artifact of testing I was doing.
    • 2.5.1
      • Fixed a bug that could cause a group to be returned as null for getGroups()
    • 2.5
      • Added in AntiBuild functionality to Permissions
      • Minor code tweaks
      • Added getGroups(world, player) to PermissionHandler so that plugins can call it to get all of a users groups
      • Fixed the inability to use the permissions -reload all command from within the console. I still need to do some more work on this as it doesn't seem to like to accept anything other than all from console.
    • 2.4
      • Refactored namespaces to keep in line with Java & Bukkit policy
        • This was cancelled as it ended up being not needed
      • Fixed setupPermissions()
    • 2.3
      • Undid removal of some code that I had overzealously purged during cleanup
      • Merged in last of Nijikokun's changes
      • Re-ordered the main class to attempt to fix the problems with Plugin API
    • 2.2
      • Developer change
      • Fixed reloading of configuration files
      • Moved commands to registering with plugin.yml
      • Commands now use onCommand instead of onPlayerCommand
      • Command is now /permissions instead of /pr

Quick question, I've read through the posts to no avail. But when I try to add a permission node to my permissions file, and restart the server, it causes a few of my other plugins to crash. Then I can revert back to my backup permissions, and all is good. Anyone have some advice?

Yes.. revert back.. make sure you have the permissions YML file the way you want it first.. then set it to read only. Try it again.. should fix it.. just remember.. when you update the file. .you have to set it to read / write.. edit the file. .then set it to read only again.. and in the server you should be able to reload without having to shut down the server.

Although, I am having permission errors when I do it inside the game.. but I think its a permission setting I have. not sure yet.

Most excellent, will give this a try right now. Also, I am aware that I can reload it while the server is running, I just seen this error, and have been playing with it on the test server, main server is good to go though! =)

Edit: I'm such a tard at times, I found my problem. For some reason when I was editing my file in Notepad ++, it was putting spaces after my nodes! Go figure, took out the spaces, and boom, it worked! Let this be lesson!

Writing complimentary functions inside of permissions that account for this and infer the world (and possibly warn the user) would solve this issue without requiring sk89q or any of the rest of us make modifications.

    # set the build: flag to false (build: false). If you want a group to be able to build

    # Groups can contain inheritance.
    # To make a group inherit the permissions from another
    # group simply place the groups name in the "inheritance:" like so:

    # Example:

    # - Default

    #
    # If a permission contains periods (.) you can denote a globalized parameter:

    # - 'foo.*'

    # This will allow you to use all general commands.

    # Single Asterisk denotes all commands:
    #
    # - '*'
    # If you give a group this permissions, do not have the group inherit any permissions

Once again, this is a case of a tab in the wrong place. Put it through a parser to check where it is, and make sure to copy and replace the WHOLE FILE once you have it working:
    http://yaml-online-parser.appspot.com/
And also, remove those - '' lines in the user permissions. They serve no purpose.

I got this Problem with my permissions.
I did not make any changes on my permissions and it changed from this:
    Code:
    Mod:
            default: false
            info:
                prefix: '&3'
                suffix: '&b'
                build: true
            inheritance:
            - VIP
            permissions:
            - 'worldguard.region.*'
            - 'worldguard.god'
            - 'worldguard.heal'
    to this:
    Code:
    Mod:
            default: false
            info:
                prefix: '&3'

@jolee1995 Did you try updating permissions, or any of your other plugins? It looks to me like quite a few of them are out of date. The problem seems to be in the communication between Permissions and the other plugins, not with Permissions itself.

By any chance are there commands for this plugin?

For now, that's it. There are not yet any built-in commands for Permissions.

Hello... I just started re-building my server and found that I would have to use Permissions now. I tried it only to find that it would not work. I had no errors and I even tried copying someone elses file. I made sure the tabs would convert to spaces in notepad++ as well. I got on my server and nothing happened... no prefixes or anything showed up and I couldn't access the plugins I listed. I named the file world.yml... is something wrong with that name? My world is named world so I used that to name the file. What am I doing wrong?? Help would be appreciated. Here is my file attached. (I got rid of the world folder since it was too big)

    You attached the wrong file.
Prefixes and suffixes don't work from Permissions alone, you need a chat plugin that works with it to use them.

    @M0rti:
    1. I already linked to your post.
    2. This is only a minor problem, as these values don't change anything how xWarp behave. The only problem is, that your layout maybe was changed.
    3. Would be an answer from the developer nice. I couldn't find any interesting on the github repository and I have no idea, if I do something wrong.

I can't test it because he's offline atm, but I forgot the ones I wanted to give him and I deleted it so I don't remember all of them... I just gave him - '*' in his group, but a lot of - -'permission_here' for his user so he can't do adminy/config stuff.
I tried testing it and made myself that group as well with his - -'permissions' but it still let me do them... is that because I'm on OP that it overrides the negative sign?

  23. Offline

    Malkierian

Yes, OPs are automatically granted full permissions, from what I understand.

Okay, thanks for answering that Malk. Now I have another problem :p. So I got iChat and all the pretty colored prefixes work, and I gave my guy admin status with the '*' and he could use LWC fine, but when I made him a mod he could not use lwc. I gave the mod 'lwc.mod' and it said he didn't have access. I am sure that is the right permission as I have used it before (I rechecked as well). The odd part is that when I am an admin and do not have op, I can still use all lwc commands. Here is what I have typed in:

    Code:
    plugin:
        permissions:
            system: default
            copies: null
    groups:
        Default:
            default: true
            info:
                prefix: '&1'
                suffix: ''
                build: false
            inheritance: null
            permissions:
        Mod:
            default: false
            info:
                prefix: '&7'
                suffix: ''
                build: true
            inheritance:
            - 'Default'
            permissions:
            - 'lwc.mod'
        Admins:
            default: false
            info:
                prefix: '&4'
                suffix: ''
                build: true
            inheritance: null
            permissions:
            - '*'
    users:
        Lanuk:
            group: Mod
            permissions: null
Never mind! I think I got it to work now!

Well, I obviously know NOTHING of permissions and have never used them before, I really don't know whats going on, I'm attaching my log of the last server session, it has all of my errors. If anyone can help me, please. I beg of you, I just want a server for 3 people. :/ (I am no genius at this, sorry. :/)

Also, I am unable to use any MultiVerse commands (perhaps because I'm messing up permissions as a whole), I get "You do not have the rights to this command". Please help, I don't know what I'm doing anymore. I have two worlds, One named "CreativeWorld" and one named "NormalWorld", I use MultiINV also. Ignore the "NOT ENOUGH RAM!!!", act like this server is on a 1GB dedicated host.

    Thanks..

Doesn't look like anything's wrong in the server log. All the plugins look relatively up to date, and you're on CB 670...
Permissions file? (Honestly, I can't see anything being wrong with that either. Without errors on the log, I can't imagine what's wrong...).

Have you tried what Uncovery and I have mentioned in an earlier post ? You have to set the file to READ ONLY. Because Bukkit 670 overwrites the file. So before you start the server. Fix the file the way you want it. Then edit its properties and set it to read only. Then start your server. Also, get rid of the word NULL that is all over the file because thats what Bukkit puts all over your config file. Check it in YML Parser and Notepad ++ to make sure there is no "Extra" characters or errors.

Anytime you make changes, set it to read and write, fix the file, then set it back to read only.

@zorphon Well, first things first. WTF config file shenanigans. Your Admin users don't need additional permissions as they already have *. So don't give them more. Next, why not add the permissions to the Default group instead of to each user. Might be slightly easier to manage.

Status update on the pull request: I'm nearly done, just need to add commands for adding/removing permissions from a node. Also, I will add a temporary fix for the NULL problem until Bukkit accepts my pull and adds it to the RBs. I'm sorry that I had to cause so much trouble by making Permissions save changes.
