Ok, since I updated to 1.3 and build #425 my CPU has been hitting 90%
when before the update it was sitting around 7%
    What gives?

    Plugins installed:
    permissions
    worldedit
    worldguard
    magiccarpet
    simpleprotect
    ichat
    antibuild
    movecraft
    eekrunes
    LWC
    essentials
    bigbrother
    flyridgefly
    warnfreeze

Plugin problem most likely. CPU usage for me is still at normal levels. Build 432 for me.

Mine has been hitting 30-50% for a while now, which is odd when compared with other servers on my block (viewed via htop)

Similar Plugins I use: Movecraft, Worldedit, Worldguard, essentials, permissions

If any of those are new, perhaps we can identify a potential cpu hog. Also I am only on 345 for the moment, going to update later in the day when plugin releases stabalize a little more (primarily worldedit and iconomy)

How do you guys manage to use essentials? Every time I install that plugin, my server lags to the point its unplayable with even 1 player.

Ok... I've discovered that when people log off, I get some SEVERE errors.
This is causing my CPU to spike high, like 90%+

Take essentials out of the mix and give it a try.

    I did.
    No change.
I tried it without any plugins at all.
    No change.
It only eats up CPU when people disconnect.
Could this be an issue with the craftbukkit build? I'm on #432 now

I just watched my monitoring as I logged in and out (no other users connected).
CPU usage shot up upon login - but I kind of expect that, serving up the world and all. Died down when I didn't move or do anything. Wasn't at unusual usage when I was moving around either.
One core of my CPU shot up to 50% briefly (~2 seconds) when I logged out. Died down to idle after that. I'm on CB 432.

Yea. Something is eating up CPU like crazy.
I'm witnessing the same when it's just me on the server
and major CPU consumption when there is 5+
When they log out, I'm getting SEVERE warnings
Then my CPU stays around the 90% mark and I have to reload the server to bring it back down.

I'll keep an eye on mine when my users start coming in.

    OK
Most of my plugins have now been updated.
The ones that haven't, I've taken out.
My server lasts about 10mins before my CPU hits near 100% and I have to reload.
    What the hell man....

Don't know if OP fixed his problem, if he did would be nice to know how. I've been banging my head against the wall for 3 days now and still no solution. Tried to remove all plugins, tried various craftbukkit builds and still the same result: 3 or more people join the server and after 10-20min CPU load goes up to 99% . It all started after we did a world reset, with old world server used to host 20 players w/o any problems. If anyone have any ideas, please share

Do what Timothy_Riches said and update to Java7 because that fixed a lot of performance issues with MC 1.3.

Remember to uninstall Java6 before installing and download and install both 32-64bit if you use 64bit OS.
    JDK-32bit
    JDK-64bit

Tried that didn't help, but I found out something interesting. When I restore my old world server behaves normally no extreme CPU load what so ever, it only spikes up when I use new world generated post 1.3 update. I suspect that there's something really wrong with new saving system they introduced with recent update.

EDIT> found a solution which solved my problem, sort of. Someone here on forums suggested to turn off the mobs in .properties file and what you know it worked. Now CPU usage doesn't go higher than 50%. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.
