Plugin Help Essentials.jar messages_en.properties help!

So I downloaded Essentials.jar and edited the colours mostly in the messages_en.properties (After \u00a7 i put the colour code i wanted) but when I erased the old messages_en.properties and put the new one in its place, uploaded it on my server and started it, essentials was not working.
