Get a player's crafting portion of their inventory.

I've raged at my computer for about 30 minutes now. How do I get the "four squares" crafting inventory?

How would I get the itemstack in a slot?

 

@Skionz how come when setting items in inventory, if you were to set an item at slot 4 it'd appear appear in the middle of the hotbar as opposed to being in the crafting portion (With the diagram you supplied)

Both are correct, depends on which method is used to get the slot.
