So, for those of you that don't know me, I've been a developer here for a few years now and I've really enjoyed my time here. I remember all the good experiences I've had interacting, helping and supporting other devs.

I'm rather conflicted and confused as to why everyone is leaving. I've read a few of the posts of admins, moderators, developers, etc. saying they're leaving, but they all come down to; "I'm exhausted," "I'm losing interest," "I've been too caught up with school/work," or something along those lines. I'm not trying to bring people down, but it seems as if most of the people of power here are leaving because they are followers, and not leaders. That's just how I'm interpenetrating it though, take it as you will.

I've helped out so many people here, and there have been so many experiences that I just want to relive. Seeing all these posts saying "I'm leaving" is honestly heart breaking, even from those that I didn't know.

I can still remember my first plugin; The Original Medic Plugin, and how it was accepted by Gravity, then when I uploaded a file and had questions, he was there to help me. I used to see lukegb get summoned once in a while. I didn't see mbaxter much, but I know he was around once in a while. I've had direct interactions with EvilSeph. There used to be games like Tag played in the offtopic section, that I would always see Lolmewn participating in. Once in a while I would see lol768 stalking the forums. Jade, she in particular would jump around, sometimes scolding me for telling people off for using unofficial builds and such. I've helped out Iroh once during a developing issue he experienced, which I though was quite interesting, I'm not sure if I was able to solve his problem, but I was glad to be there to assist him. I saw evilmidget38 around a few times, and his interactions were always exciting *scowls*. I've had a few interactions with TnT, and I always loved interacting with. narrowtux and the creator of Lockette created some of my favorite plugins. c0mp and I had a few interactions as well, which were pleasant. I never interacted with Dinnerbone, but I was here when he was originally the lead.

I know I've missed a lot of the staff, but they've all made my time here a great experience. I've loved developing, getting and receiving help, as well as interacting with the admins/moderators/other devs.

I wish things could just go back to the way things were originally; have all the Retired Staff come back and everything be nice and peaceful. I would at least love to keep in touch with the former staff..

Running into the dl.bukkit.org down for legal reasons post was very depressing.. thanks Wolvereness.. I hope this gets sorted out.

Now we're left with staff that people don't really have the interactions they did with the retired staff. I felt that there was a relationship with the retirees, and I felt as if I was a part of the Bukkit family. Everything has fallen apart and now I'm lost. What do I do now? Do I continue or stop. Maybe go on a little hiatus. Who knows. I just know for a fact this hurts and it feels like a huge part of my family has just died.. Sorry for the long post, I just needed somewhere to vent, and for people to get an understanding of how much the Bukkit project means to some people. Thank you for reading.

It honestly brings a tear to my eye. Remembering working indirectly with Chaseoes & ChaseChocolate, and assisting Compressions with his Soup. inventorman101 and I had a few interactions and I'm pretty sure he's the one who posted a few resources that I found helpful. As well as having my double posts annihilated by Necrodoom.

I feel your pain. I wasn't ready to quit on my plugins, I feel like my hand is being forced. People leave, things change. I can't fault anyone for getting tired and leaving because they don't want to work on it anymore.

I can however fault someone for spending 2 years contribution to a project knowing full well what it was and then suddenly having a problem with it. It's one thing to leave because your no longer interested or can't do it anymore, it's another to self destruct a community driven project that affects thousands of people who have poured hours into their plugins and servers. While what he did may have been his right, it's still a very childish thing to do. I'm not angry though, I pity him because his name will now represent something in the open source community forever, and it's not something good. All of his contributions to this project are now irrelevant for he has earned himself a bad reputation. That to me is sad.

As for what to do now, I'm waiting. I'm not going to spend hours of my time on a project that can't be used. I'm not likely to move to anything new (Forge, Sponge, etc) because no matter how it's accomplished it falls to the same problem we had here. I may consider the official API if and when we ever get that, but I'm not hopeful to anything happening at this point for Bukkit.

Keep in touch. Bukkit was probably my easiest base to develop for. I always have ideas and I love playing on bukkit servers; seeing all the cool things people have done with the Bukkit API. It inspires me.. I have a lot more trouble developing for myself or just creating programs. I wish things would just go back to how they were.. As you said, things change, but this is a huge, sudden change. I don't even know if it is worth it to quit.. quitting could end me developing career.

That's how I feel.. some of the "higher ups" have been inactive for like over a year. And now they're back, just to say their goodbyes.

You probably don't remember me, but you are the reason I stayed with Bukkit. Almost exactly one year ago, I private messaged you asking for help on my plugin:

"I've been asking for a lot of help on these forums (Mostly from you) and in the past few days, I think I'm at the final problem with my program. You seem to be online a lot and sense you made the teleport code for me, and because I don't know how to use it, I figured you could help me out again."

I was a completely new developer. It was extremely frustrating not knowing what anyone meant, when they tried to help me. Most people just couldn't take my nooby questions, and didn't reply back, when I said "How?" You helped me. A LOT. There's a total of 28 replies on the private message I sent you, and that's just one of the times you helped me. If it wasn't for you, I would have just given up on Bukkit. If people like you quit, Bukkit will die. Staff aren't all that important. What Bukkit needs is community members like you. That's the only thing that will keep Bukkit alive.

Why are so many people quitting anyway? They need to have some more faith. I know everything looks really crappy right now, but it will probably all turn out fine.

The excuse I'm hearing most is that they don't want to work for free for a multi million dollar company now that it's been discovered Mojang owns Bukkit. This however is a load of nonsense since anything that promotes Minecraft is essentially doing free work for Mojang. So even if Bukkit were not owned by Mojang, developing for it is still free work for Minecraft. The fact that Mojang bought it and left it alone for the community to work on should be a positive, they took it as a negative.

Many of the people that left are moving to Sponge, but they are still working for Mojang... for free.

Thank you, I know I've helped people here and there, but I didn't think my help went that far.

Something that I don't understand is that if people are quitting because they don't want to work for Mojang for Free, they're dumb. Because they've been working for Mojang since Mojang bought out Bukkit like.. two years ago? So they've been working for free, not even knowing who they were really working for..

The point of the Bukkit project was to be free and open source. The people who started the Bukkit project have been working for free (minus donations) ever since it was started. I'm not sure why it has just now become a problem. I don't want the Bukkit project to die, but it seems like that's where things are heading.

Even with Dinnerbone back being the lead of the project, he's lost all his friends that used to work alongside him, he may not have lost them as real friends, but he seems to have lost them as project partners.

Also, what is Sponge? I can't find anything on it.

MrSparkzz Well, I'm not supposed to link it here, but it's url is very similar to the one for Valve's Steam with a slight change. That's all I will say.
