Nether portal can't be placed side by side?

    I used to type "/i 90" and put 2 nether portal blocks side by side.
    I tried to use worldedit to do it, but it doesn't work anymore.
    When I put any block beside a nether portal block, it removes it.
    I don't want to use another plug-in to be able to place these.
    Is there a trick to do this?

    I want to have nether portal blocks inside of a wall made of quartz.
