Combating X-Rayers - Is there a low-resource plugin to hinder hackers?

Hey guys!

I am currently working on my Bukkit Minecraft server, and I am planning on creating a seamless economy.

I have most of the holes covered, but there is one thing that threatens the legitimacy of the economy: X-Ray abusers!

I had already taken a look at Oreobfuscator, but after learning how resource-consuming it was (My server is only 2 gig RAM), I am steering away from it.

So I come to you server owners and admins and I ask you: What do YOU use to fight X-Rayers, and is it effective?

What are my other options besides Oreobfuscator with fighting abusers?

It's an abysmal situation. You either need to annoy your users with plugins or have tons of eyes-on/moderation.

You already tried Orb... Here's another way to annoy people:

I don't think that a light weight solution really exists. The choices for hiding ores has been:
1) Oreobfuscator
2) Plugin that replaces ores with stone and notes the location so they still drop

The first obviously has the problem of being too heavy for your serer. The second has a small issue where if the database gets corrupted your server loses all of the ores on the map.

The ways I have addressed this is to use a plugin to keep block stats and penalize (or ban) players that are obviously xraying. Or to have the prices on items be dynamic so that buying them raises the prices and selling them lowers the prices.

You could always use the FoundDiamonds plugins to tip off staff that may be on at the time.

Accept the resource usage and use Orebfuscator.

The alternative would be a Ore-Stats plugin, that creates statistics how much an player found, mostly in correlation to the mined stone blocks.
However, these are not very usefull IMO.
They either can have a amount of false positive (I once compared the stats of XRays with legit players and some legit players had a way better Stone/Diamond stat) or they require you as admin to be active.
Also, it does not prevent people from X-Raying, it just makes it easier for you to ban them. They still can have a big impact on the server economy, and you'll have many problem with removing the extra diamonds.

This does not occur with Orebfuscator, X-Ray is simply not working. (Downside: you can't ban them for XRay)

(And these Ore-Stats plugins are obsolute IMO. Just use the stats of your Logging plugin and look for people with many diamonds and review their mines - if they use X-Ray you'll see it...)

 

I installed Orebfusicator and didn't notice any resource impact at all. I suggest you try it.
