hi, i'm thinking about making a nice little semi- vanilla server simply with a group system and an anti hack. can somebody recommend good plugins for my requirements? any other suggestions for vanilla would be nice as well.

NoCheatPlus or AntiCheat, WorldEdit, WorldGuard, Essentials. Those are the plugins most servers have.

I recently added Grief Prevention and Orebfusicator. I'm pretty happy with them.

Haven't in years but before I left it was bPermissions, CommandBook, WorldEdit, mChatSuite, noCheatPlus, Craftbook (while not needed, it's a lot of fun and doesn't take away from the vanilla view), orebfusicator. May also want to look into custom server software.

Well, I don't want to shamlessly plug my own plugins as a suggestion, but I've found them very valuable as server administrator. Also they work automatically without custom configuration (YouTube videos provided for quick summary):

You can track see where players are logging in from and most importantly, see "related accounts." Often times there will be multiple players from the same location.

And another goody which is very lightweight but players like is:
