Where are all of the mobs?

I recently updated to CB670 and started noticing my mob trap becoming less efficient over time. I decided to do some exploring and nothing had been changed on the inside, so I simply shrugged it off. A few days later (today) I decided to test out my config for CookieMonster by going out and killing some mobs. Unfortunately, there are none to be found. Anywhere. I searched. None. Nada. Zilch.

Here is a list of my plugins:

    Code:
03:16:23 [INFO] Plugins: AppleTree, Blacksmith, BlockCantKeepUpSpam, ControllerB
lock, CookieMonster, creaturebox, CriticalHits, DisposalChest, DropChest, Dungeo
nReward, Elevators, FenceStack, FoundDiamonds, HeroicDeath, HomeX, iChat, iConom
y, iConomyChestShop, iConomyDeath, Interesting Places, ItemId, Jail, Lampstone,
CustomLog, LWC, MCDocs, Melt, MinecartManiaCore, MinecartManiaSignCommands, Mons
terHunt, MonsterTamer, Nether, NoExplode, nSpleef, OChestDump, Permissions, Pick
Boat, QuickBelt, SendGift, SignEdit, SimpleShop, Slots, Stackable, TentThis, Tom
bstone, TPack, TravelPortals, Turnstile, VehicleExit, vStopFire, WolfNames, Wolf
    Pound, General, MinecartManiaAdminControls, MinecartManiaAutomations
Any ideas? Anyone else having this issue?
(Before anyone says it, yes: Monsters are enabled in my server.properties.)

    Same problem...
Only animals and wolfs but no monsters.

    Same here :'(

Sometimes, after server restart, I have a lot of animals at my login location but soon after their despawn, I see less and less often animals. Then nothing at all and no monsters, except of cage spawns. It seams so resolve itself, if another player comes in-game but then after their logout, spawning is broken again.

I have no clue if this is plugin related but for so far I can't reproduce it without any plugins enabled (CB670).

    Plugins I share with you:
    Code:
HeroicDeath, SignEdit, MinecartManiaCore, MinecartManiaSignCommands, AppleTree, FenceStack
    All my plugins:
    Code:
    AppleTree (0.4), BlockConsoleMessages (0.2), BorderGuard (3.00), DeathSigns (0.2), FenceStack (1.13), Growbie (2.3), HeroicDeath (1.7.3), HeroSneak (1.1.0), LoginMessage (0.6_2), MinecartManiaCore (1.09), MinecartManiaSignCommands (1.09), MinecartManiaStation (1.09), PaintingSwitch (0.1), PumpkinDiver (0.16), SleepAnnounce (0.35), SpeedSign (0.4)
Plugins I can exclude so far:
    Code:
    BlockConsoleMessages, DeathSign, HeroSneak, SleepAnnounce, SpeedSign

I do not think it is because of the plugins, I tried deleting them all.

Have the same problem on 670, only with me it are normal animals not spawning. In caves there will be some zombies, and at night, after a few minutes, there will be zombies around, but during they, there are hardly any mobs... Maybe ones in 5 minutes, when searching wolves, I can see a group of a few animals, but nothing more than that...

Yes, just finished trying to remove one by one. Always the same shit. Sometimes it seams to be fine for a while but then poof.

By removing parts of my copy of server, I noticed that there were more monsters, but the hits far fewer animals. I think it's related.
More you put torches, more animals spawn. And suddenly we meet less monsters.
It is as if we had a limit of mobs and the animals left more room for monsters.
It is yet to be verified, but I'm pretty sure my theory.

Same problem here, tried no plugins, too, didn't work. I'm on build 670 just like everybody else, and after some time, mobs just stop spawning.

    I have something new.
It does not come from Bukkit, I have the same problem when I run an official server.
Once they begin to cross many animals can not cross over monster ...
Will have to post our problem on the official forum of Minecraft.

    MCEdit made my day \o/

Possible workaround: In MCEdit, select whole chunks and delete all entities. Do it step by step, otherwise MCEdit might crash because of memory issues. Keep in mind that this will delete all carts, boats, wolves and paintings. So what I did is to grab all my carts before and afterwards I did import my decorated homes from backup as MCEdit-schematics.

My world isn't that huge (about 80MB) but it's the pretty first and only world, still from late alpha. For now, the spawn rate is better then ever. We did a test run of almost two hours on two servers and it's stable with all plugins enabled and CB670. For the first time of my Minecraft life, I'm happy to be surrounded by creepers and see sheep, trampling down my crops again.

PS: I couldn't reproduce this bug with the official server but with bukkit, I noticed that it was somewhat longer stable with less plugins. I had some weird encounters, as I was testing CB617. For example, I did find an old arrow on my rail track. A silly skeleton did shoot it at me days ago. That arrow wasn't there on CB670

But when you use MCEdit, you have to delete parts of your map, like how you say it? then you will have to build everything again... I think there should be a better solution than this :p

You don't have to delete parts of the map, just the entities. I've had this same problem, but I just use the /butcher command (from WorldEdit I think?) and it says something like "killed 5000 creatures" then mobs and animals start spawning again.

Minecraft has a hard limit on the amount of mobs/animals/entities can be spawned. When running bukkit, the server doesn't tell certain mobs (namely squid) to despawn (which they normally do after a while). So you end up with all of your allocated mobs, in one part of the world, and no more can spawn.

If you start your server without bukkit, and have animal and monsters turned off, it should delete any of the extra mobs hanging around your server. Start it back up normally and it should be good to go for a while.

Also, TNT'ing giant swarms of squid is good for releasing anger at your server populations :)

MCEdit was the first thing that came to my mind because I don't know any tools to clean chunks automatically from borked pre-release thingies. I didn't put it well, I guess. I didn't delete any parts of my map. Just entities. Unfortunately, for some reasons, MCEdit does handle paintings like entities as well. I'm not an expert on this so better check http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Entity. Also, MCEdit hasn't a substract-from-selection tool. Therefore I just cleaned everything, to keep it easy. Then I did override certain areas with exports from the original file, because this still includes all entities. By this way I recovered not only paintings but also a squid inside of an aquarium. I don't think that's too much effort for something that great like an unique Minecraft world. My map is running fine now and even more smoothly btw.

But the problem is, I'm not using that plugin and still got the problem??? Running the server in vanilla with mobs turned off did help by the way, there spawn animals again, but I think it's still not as many as it used to be

Little bump for the topic, because the problem is still there with cb777. Has anyone yet found a solution?

I repeat, after remove all plugins, the problem persist. With Craftbukkit or with the official server...
