I'm getting a lot of DDoS attacks, and I am wondering if there's a way to make my server appear offline to banned players/IPs. Everytime the server is up, they hit me with 6gbps attack and I am tired of it.

I wonder if a plugin like PersonalMOTD could assist with this.

We can't block DDoS attacks, making it appear offline wouldn't help either as they don't need to have minecraft open to DDoS you

  5. best way is code yourself script that will sync your minecraft ipbans and convert them to firewall bans. Thats how we did it

Is that possible? In what language? Example code?

Not stop them, trick the ddos'ers into thinking it's still offline.

DDoS'ers don't care about the online status, tricking won't help, if they DDoS you ( if doing right ) they will block every internet connection

  9. Use NanoGuard. This plugin is designed to combat DDoS attacks as well as hacking in general

Thanks I'll give it a try

These attackers will attack when they see the server is up, the server goes up for awhile, then randomly goes down, I assume they are watching through their minecraft client, just refreshing the page.

  11. No prob. I've used it on my server to specifically counter DDoS attacks and it works perfectly, trust me :p

Or they have other tools, I can provide an php script that shows if a port is in use or not ( used it to check if my server was online )

    That's from the NanoGuard page.

Nevertheless, we can't fully stop a DDoS attack using simply software, nor can any other software.

Not everyone is that smart, kudos to them if they do it, but I would like to make it seem offline, some kids will fall for it.

If they know how to DDoS then I assume that they aren't stupid

It might stop them doing a DoS attack.. (either using tools to ping your server to death) or just spam commands etc to your server. Why not just call the police?

You can't stop a DDoS attack like this. The only way to stop it is to get DDoS protection, and if that's too expensive there is no other way sadly.

DDoS attacks aren't sent off one computer directly to you, they are sent through various machines in many different types and sadly this cannot be stopped. Usually, giving the threat and saying it's illegal will scare some people off who bought a booter for a few bucks and think they can go around booting people. Making firewall bans off users will only stop the actual user from using it, and anyone smart who boots probably uses a VPN. They are sent off various computers anyways, I know there is a website that stops a common list of IPs from getting anywhere into your system which will stop popular booters but not private one's.

In any case, it's quite sad someone resorts to booting and you should just laugh at how desperate they are. It's worthless and it's sad.

  18. I agree with themadman300 . I just want to say that many hosting companies nowadays offer excellent DDoS protection, however there is no way to completely stop them. Making the server appear offline will NOT deter anyone who wants to DDoS your server or make someone stop DDoS'ing it. If you want to reduce your chance of DDoS attacks, get a server host that offers some kind of DDoS protection and, as I stated before, download and install NanoGuard. What both the hosting company and tNanoGuard do is if they detect a large amount of packets being sent and flooding the server, they will attempt to close the connection with the attacker. There is no guarantee that they can prevent every attack, but that is your best bet if you want to reduce your risk of getting DDoS'ed. If the attacker has enough skills and motivation they can and will bypass any protection you have.

My cousin is 12 and had purchased a booter, not legitly ddos, but he still took his friends offline.. until he realized it was illegal.

I am not trying to STOP the ddos, I am trying to appear offline to the DDoS'ers so they think I shut down permanently and stop ddosing. I solved it by getting a new host with ddos protection.
