running this system and its only running 1 craft bukkit server with like 3 plugins.

    cpu: 2.66 duo core
    ram: 4 gigs
    internet upload: 5 mg
    internet download: 16 meg

I also have a 3.6 pentium 4 processor i am thinking about putting back in the computer since minecraft only runs on 1 core anyway.

My server crashes like every half hour to an hour. help please:)

How much users are you trying to hold in your server?

probably at most 10-15. its just for me and a few friends.

I did one of those test things that should tell you how many people you can run and it told me 15, but it didnt ask about the cpu, it only asked ram and internet speeds.

I have read that 4 gigs of ram would be good more than sufficient.

What are the java options you're using to start the server? Sometimes those can cause more harm than good, unless you know EXACTLY what they do and have tuned them specifically for your machine and use-case. If you're using any java options, try removing them and see how the server runs.

i have not changed any java options. I don't know about them and never touched anything with java, other than download it lol

Minecraft servers need more CPU Power than that. Also your internets not fast enoughf.

so should i put the pentium3.6 back in the computer???

    bump w/ update.

I put the pent 4 3.6 back in the computer. Now it runs the server, but my computer restarts by iteself. I think its probably overheating or something.

    help.

    suggestions?

its either overheating or its a bad PSU. my guess is overheating.try running the machine eith the side panel off. google and download a small stresstest program called prime95 http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103

run the stress test for a half hour or so.if it doesnt shut the system down then its over heating due to lack of air flow...let me know the results and we will go from there :)

  10. bull. my server is an old intel pentium 4 2.66GHz with 1.5 GB ram and 10 meg down, 2 up internet and it can support up to 10 players no problem. it laggs a little with more that 5 players but its tolerable.

i concur.im running a server on pretty much the same machine([email protected] ghx 1.5 gigs ddr1) it its fine for 10-15 players aswell.i allllso run a small pirate ship battles server with tnt cannons on a ,get this pentium 3!! @ 667 MHz!! on 1 gig of pc133 ram all running on linux and its fine for 8 players all fireing tnt cannons with, for the most part no lagg at all.with the exacption of once in a while my network takes a crap momentarily but even then it doesnt become unplayable

well if you all are running with worse specs than me, can you tell me how you setup your server and what you did to get passed these overload errors?

ran the test for a hour an it says, torture test completed 15 test in 1 hour, 0 minutes- 0 errors, 0 warnings.

you ran it for an hour and it didnt error or crash? well the system is fine then(hardware wise atleast) as far as server setup, well i run linux but you dont have to go to that extreme if you dont want to.use windows XP if you want,do a fresh install, strip the OS down as much as possible by going to control panel add and remove and remove all the windows components except the networking.next get java then microsoft visual 2008.now go controlpanel/ system performance/advanced (tab)/ im not at home and i cant remember exactly what the button is called but i believe it is the top one on the window you are now on.you want to set page file memory to something like 2500 min and 3500 max.this ensures that if you run out of real ram your server wont grind to a halt completely.click set.k,now get craftbukkit.jar and make the run batch.use this script to start the server
    Code:
    @ECHO OFF
    SET BINDIR=%~dp0
    CD /D "%BINDIR%"
    "%ProgramFiles%\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe" -Xmx3584M -Xms3584M -jar craftbukkit.jar
    PAUSE
run the server once then shut it down.go to the server yml and set viewdistance to 5.any lower then 5(in my opinion) is horrible and intolerable. turn snooper off and set mobs wayyy down.you can play with different mob settings.i forget what i keep mine at but its loooow. other things you can do to improve performance are disabling nether and the end however i like to keep these on . ummmmm, thats all i can think of right now off the top of my head.dont bother with ptweaks or nolagg.in MY experience thy only cause, either more lagg or other problems that you didnt have before.im sure there will be a flood of ppl trying to say im wrong about this or im an idiot for saying that bla bla bla.im in no way an expert on bukkit.this being said i HAVE done alot of experimentation with bukkit and low end hardware and this is the best setup(just short of using linux with no GUI) that iv been able to manage.and additional input/advice is wellcome as im allways open to new suggestions and willing to learn new things.if iv learned anything from my time in the bukkit world its that, the learning is never done...let me know how it works out for ya bro

grrr i keep messing up the start script lol

  14. i assume your running windows? what version?

it may be that windows is doing that thing where in downloads and installs updates then auto reboots, or something about your Minecraft server is causing a bluescreen and its auto rebooting.
if your on xp, you can find out how to disable auto reboot on crash here. that way, if it is bluescreening, at least you can see that it has and you can go from there.
another good idea is to check the system event log. look for critical errors. this may help in that respect.

running window 7. dont have any other os to put on the system. don't feel like spending money on it.

  16. that's fine. the same process for changing the auto reboot setting applies.
if you could, please read this then report back.

So when the server crashes. the computer doesnt actually shut down, it just sounds like it stops running for a split second and continues. The server just continues running and i just rejoin. So i dont think its an overheating issue.

  18. so what your saying is that the fan(s) on the server go quite, you get disconnected, then it fires up again?

do you know what to do to fix this?

  22. just a thought, but it may actually be a problem with your motherboard.
Most motherboards have fan speed controllers on them to throttle the fan speeds based on temperature to keep the system quiet. it possible that when your servers running, (bukkit servers dont use much CPU unless processing something like a world generation or a big world edit is happening) the fan is throttling down so much that it's actually stopping (or going so slow it might as well have stopped) and, in order to protect its self, most CPU's will throttle their performance right back to avoid damaging themselves or other components.
the small temperature sensor that controls the fan speed then realises that its getting hot and starts the fan again, which could explain why the fan(s) on the server go quite, then fire up again.

it also explains why nothing happened during the torcher test you did. it was keeping the CPU active and generating heat, and so keeping the fans going

if its a relatively new motherboard, have a look in the bios for a setting like "smart fan speed" or "fan speed" and disable it or set it higher.
also consider taking the CPU heat sink off and replacing the thermal compound to ensure the heat sink can do its job properly.

I understand your idea. But when the fans shut down. its not like they gradually got quiet. It almost sounds like i unplugged the computer and then replugged it in. Just like as if it restarted. But it doesnt restart. Continues running and server just keeps running. I checked i dont have the setting you are talking about. i did up the speed of my low tensity fan speed to see if that helps.

edit: this did not help any. Still getting the restart sound and server crash.

The cpu compound is fresh. It was re applied a week ago when i reinstalled the pent4 3.6 cpu instead of the dual core 2.66.

  24. well, i'm officially out of ideas. :(

Certain Bukkit plugins (such as HawkEye and minebackup) make use of other CPU cores if available so that they don't slow down the server when performing functions.

...and for the record, I have an ancient Debian linux box (I'm posting from it now) with a 1.8GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 5meg down, 2.3meg up and I can host a server with 5 external players without problems.

Well can you help me figure out whats wrong with mine? I have better stats than you. I am not running many plugins, right now i only have grief prevention, group administration, and dynamap. So i don't think that is the issue.

dynmap (not dynamap) can cause issues if you haven't optimised your configuration - make sure that tiles aren't rendering too frequently and you could also disable rendering on leaf-burn, leaf-decay, player-move, etc (block-place and block-break and chunk generation should be left enabled).

could you post a copy of your dynmap config on paste bin for me?

  29. he sent me his server files for me to test it on my system. heres the dynmp config
    Code:
    # Dynmap-GriefPrevention configuration

may be a stupid question, but is the computer set to sleep or spin down disks after a certain amount of time?

I meant a dynmap config on just dynmap, not grief prevention. And also, that is my config, I was looking for a config from someone else that i could use to look at to optimize mine.
