SOLVED Making the server available

Hello,

I'll be shortly standing up a Minecraft server for my son and a few others. Being new to Minecraft as a whole: If anyone has experiences they went through that they wish they could turn back time and correct, please share them.

I appreciate everyone's assistance with getting me up to speed.

You mean like problem fix?

 

Not necessarily; rather, stuff like how you setup the groups, # of people you let on the server, security issues, challenges managing the server, downtime, etc..

Well I recommend the Essentials Plugins, it has alot of feature, it is not lightweight but it has alot of commands, about 15 pages of commands, most of them are for fun but some is for easier management like you do not need to write the player's whole name to ban him, like imagine you want to ban me, you can type /ban Power instead of /ban Powerhalo

Also, I recommend the plugin Factions, definitly the best grief protection plugin that I used for all the time my server is up, the users can manage their grief protection by claiming land.

PlayerLogger is a good logging plugin to see who griefed, if you suspect that someone griefed check the log of that specific player and you can see how much blocks he destroyed, the blocks he place, the commands, the chat and more.

MultiVerse is a good plugin if you want to make your server public, it makes more land to build on by enabling you to create a new world and being able to warp to it with default Essentials commands but you need to go to it and set a warp there first (/mv tp nameofworld)

xAuth if you want to make a offline server, it just adds the /register and /login command and all the passwords are encrypted so you cannot see them but it make the players for confident Well it is not a bad idea as most of the Minecraft Players are using the cracked version.

Pail and Pailplus is 2 good plugins that interact with eachother, Pail is a custom window that opens and that you can easily manage your server with.

Well I think it's all.

 

WorldGuard is a godsend for protecting high-traffic areas. Oh and don't run it in offline mode - you get a few people who haven't paid but are well meaning, and a lot of people exploiting the ability to choose any username.

My son just fired it up and has reported 2 items in need of repairs. I'll try to phrase it the best I can. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated:

1) Issuing a respawn command results in the player being put in lava.
2) Not able to mark/sign items the player creates.

1.) Have them reset the spawn point. Go to the area you'd like the spawn to be, and then type /setspawn

2.) Could be a permissions issue, make sure your plugins are up to date and that your console is not throwing any plugin errors that could cause this.

 

Good to go on #1, and will confirm #2. Question: Is there a way to start everyone off with a certain amount of money? The players currently are starting at 0, and I'm getting requests to start at 75.

Got the money to work via downloading the Economy plugin.

Hmmm.... Just make sure you didn't disable them or anything in WorldGuard or Essentials. It could also be another plugin though, are you running any other Permissions systems and/or sign modifications?

 

Here are my current plugins:

Try removing EssentialsProtect and see if it does anything. I always had issues when I had it.

 

how is essentialsprotect prevents you from placing signs on houses? doesnt make sense to me.

 

I'm just suggesting it, it's a useless plugin anyways. I've had issues with it every time I mess with it so the first thought that comes to mind when I hear it is: Remove it.

Also, I don't really see anything else that could interfere. Maybe just start removing plugins until the problem solves itself...

 

no plugin here that blocks placing signs.. and essentialsprotect isnt useless. most likely you have looked under the essprotect section in config.yml

was is response to stealth, but what is the error when you try to place a sign?

 

Interestingly enough: No error raised to the server console nor the game. However, I'm having users re-test to confirm the issue still exists.

are you near spawn by chance? all your building preventing plugins would cause messages to show up

are you trying to build/place signs near the /spawn point? all the plugins you have which can prevent building will cause a no permission message to show up, except bukkit spawn protection.

 

Oh, I see. I had the users try a test yesterday, and they still reported issues. However, I'll confirm how near they were to their spawn point. Thanks again for all your help.

Confirmed that the spawn point is far from where the users are trying to mark what they build.
