Use falsebook or craftbook, there's mob spawning signs there that triggers on redstone signals, place a sign under a block and the mob spawns on top of it.
And they also provide with a bunch of neat things :)

EDIT: Go with craftbook instead, since the developer of falsebook has left it without telling what is happening with it in the future.

I don't know why I'm helping you since you could've figured this out with some basic google-fu, but here it goes:

First of all, remove falsebook if you installed it.

Secondly, make sure that you have sufficient permissions to create IC signs. I don't know the exact permission, but I assume it is something along '-craftbook.mcXXXX' where XXXX is the ic number, or craftbook.allic.

    A good list of features

    All ICs that exist

The one that you're interested in:

To create it, place a sign.
    Leave the first row blank.
    Second, type [MC1200]
    Third, type Chicken

When triggered by redstone, this sign will now spawn one chicken.

It's good to help if you can and i appreciate the help just one is there a way to trigger it without redstone?

    Thanks

Nope, but there's signs that triggers redstone, for example a player detector, can't remember the IC numbers but I'll give it a shot:

    Blank
    MC1272
    5 (wich is the radius)
    Player

Cant remember if it is the radius first, or the player.

The sign should be placed like this:
LEVER | BLOCK | SIGN PLACED ON THE BLOCK
Then the lever will change whenever a player is within 5 blocks from the sign.
