"Throwing out single-player was the first step in order to make the API possible, and that’s done now. We decided to release 1.3 without the API, because otherwise it would be an even longer wait for a Minecraft update." -mojang.com It sounds like MC 1.4 will have a universal API. This could largely obsolesce Bukkit. What do you guys think will happen?
It has been said before many times. Bukkit will continue to exist until there is no longer a need for bukkit. The Bukkit team will not abandon its user base at first sight of a Mojang-based plugin system.
Mojang "owns" Bukkit now, don't they? I know that all of the Bukkit staff are also staff of Mojang so that would be my best assumption. I would also assume that the API that they are talking about would be similar if not identical to Bukkit's API. -John
Four of the original key Bukkit developers are now employees of Mojang. However, more developers have been added to the Bukkit team, so there will be individuals there who have no attachment to Mojang at all. It has been made quite clear that Bukkit was a learning curve for the "new" Mojang four. The MC API will not be the same as Bukkit as its objectives are different to those of Bukkit, and it has control over the source code of Minecraft, rather than having to tweak it to allow Bukkit to work. There will be similarities and there will be differences. The MC API is not a cut'n'paste job from Bukkit and under the conditions of Bukkit's creation, Mojang doesn't own any part of Bukkit. Sorontar
