    Hi,

I'm considering getting a new server to host Minecraft on, I have never used any i7 model CPU's before, but, that's what I might get now. Could someone compare the two processors and sort of tell which one performs better?

    My Current Server:
    E3-1270 3.4Ghz 4/8 Core
    24GB DDR3 RAM
    120GB Solid State Drive
    100Mbps - 3tb/m

    Server to Upgrade to:
    i7 3770 3.4Ghz 4/8 Core
    32GB DDR3 RAM
    256GB Solid State Drive
    1Gbps - 10tb/m

I assume the i7 3770 is the clear winner?

  2. well the server to upgrade to has better RAM, network and SSD so it all really depends on pricing of it, im not an expert but i would guess their pretty level pegging in regards to CPU

The RAM is overkill. My bukkit server only uses about 3-8GB steadily. The only thing I want as an upgrade is the processor, but with this i7 I might get, I guess everything is an upgrade.

  4. how much is the price difference?

well from what i know of the E3 serie is better than i7 for bukkit unless im wrong, witch could change my life. lol

Eh, I've decided to stick with my E3-1270. After all I thought about the hassle of it and decided it's not worth it :p Besides, paying less for the i7 might not be the best. "You get what you pay for".

The E3 series is specifically designed for server usage, so it is not only more reliable, supports ECC memory and I would not doubt it is more optimized for RAID. The i7 does allow overclocking, but it is not really a good idea to overclock your server :)

I love watching clueless people pretend to know about CPU differences.

The 3770 is newer, has 3W lower TDP, has a 100MHz higher maximum "turbo", and has all the same features of the 1270 except that it cannot support ECC memory. Before you count that as a disadvantage, you should check whether your host is using ECC modules in the first place.

A CPU has no "RAID optimization". RAID is a function of the motherboard chipset, or a dedicated controller card.

I'd go with #2. While you may loose the ECC RAM, gaining 8GB of RAM, twice the SSD space and a gigabit line (with more bandwidth!) should make the upgrade worth it.

Honestly, the 3770 wins...........although I am sure it cost a good amount more at the same time..

The performance difference between the 1270 and the 3770K really is not that much. If the E3-1270 had 32 GB RAM, I would rather have it, due to have EEC memory.

EDIT: I see that the 3770 is on a gigabit connection and also has more bandwidth......now this can change things. In this case, I'd get the 3770 IF AND ONLY IF it is from a provider with a good upstream providers. If it is someone like Datashack, who use purely Cogent bandwidth that is most likely oversold, then that nearly defeats the whole point of a gigabit line and I would rather have the E3-1270. On the other hand, if it is from a good provider that has GOOD multi-homed providers, is not oversold and can push that speed, then I would rather have the gigabit 3770 server.

Lolol, you have it backwards. The E3-1230 is a server CPU and supports ECC RAM, whilst the 3770 is a desktop CPU and does not support ECC RAM.

You obviously didn't read what I said, because that's what I said.
