Does anyone else do this shit or am I just a bit crazy? I never like the worlds created via the generator, so I've been creating my own via various applications. It seems like a bitch and a half at first, and it's annoying as can be until you get the hang of it. But man, once you do, it's BEAUTIFUL. It's like being a God or something. Every mountain, valley, stream, is all handcrafted by YOU. Everything that the players experience is a product of your imagination. I just love that feel.

For anyone wondering, I'm using WorldPainter and MCEdit, along with VoxelSniper and WorldEdit for in-game touchup. If anyone wants any maps done, I'll do them, but not for free, as it's a bit time consuming for large maps. I'm currently in the process of making the map for my MMORPG'esque Survival server (up and coming) the damn map has a 11 hour export time and is 8GB, nowhere near finished though ;^p

Back on topic though, does anyone else do this? If you guys do, have any tips or tricks? The pictures are of a small Jungle island off the coast of the mainland. Well, not really small... but you get the idea. You can just barely see from one shore to the other of the lake in the center, while on "Far" view distance.

From cones to mountains, a comparison between the beginning and end of the process. If anyone is interested in the technique, I'd be more than glad to post it. Please realize that the material texturing of said mountains is not complete. I just use stone as it's easier to see what I'm doing. The surrounding area is sand by default, as I raised it from the ocean bed. It will be painted at a later date.

The mountains on the bottom of the picture are about 190 or so blocks high, whereas the small cones in the top right are about 85 blocks high.

Yes. The co-owner of my server just made a 5000x5000 custom map for us.We just as much unique terrain and biomes as we could. Generated worlds are an amazing feat, but they get boring once you've played them for awhile.

I can see how that could happen, especially with a world only 5000 x 5000. Is it 5000 blocks, or 5000 chunks, because that makes a big difference. I've made 5000 block maps, and they were pretty small. On the flipside, I've also made 5000 chunk maps and that shit was ridiculous.

I'm intending to do an expansion type thing, where pre-made continents, worlds, etc. are released on a semi-regular basis. With dungeons, and other assorted things to do, I doubt players will run out of things to do between content updates. I'm sure at some point, I'll just let the world border begin generating using the in-game system.

Looking good! One thing I wanted to point out though: I see you've painted the entire map with the Populate layer. If that's what you want you can just check "allow Minecraft to populate the entire terrain" on the Export screen! No need to plaster the map with green squares everywhere. ;)

I've noticed if I let minecraft populate it, I end up with a lot of buggy caverns and trees.

jorisk322 here ya go! Some in-game images.

Looking at the large mountain closest to the lake in the center of the island.

On the other side of the large mountain by the lake, looking toward the other large mountain.

On the beach all the way to the right if you're looking at the map from above.

Nice! I wish I would have the skills/patience to do things like this.

jorisk322 it's really easy once you get the hang of it. It's made to be like a Painting program such as MS Paint. I've noticed that the thicker density random brush, on different strengths is the best way to make natural looking landscape. The island took me about... 6 hours, and still isn't quite done. I have yet to add in correct caverns, population mapping, and resource mapping.

I get the feeling this would be so much easier on a drawing tablet... Just another reason for me to get a Bamboo Create I guess.

derpium It is easy for YOU when you got the hang of it :p. I probably never will, because I get annoyed very fast when things don't work out as I imagined. Also I don't really have a lot of time to practice. The program you use seems cool though. I will try it. Does it only work on mac (I do have one, but I can't use it ATM)?

It's available for Mac, Windows and most Linux distros. I personally have only ever used the Mac version. However, it does have some problems with using a LOT of memory for certain processes such as world generating. I'm generating a 50000x50000 world, as I didn't think 5000x5000 would be sufficient. But, when I attempted it in WorldPainter it would use all the available RAM and ask for more. I did some quick calculations and it wants about 25GB of RAM to generate a world that size. So, I'm using the WorldBorder plugin to fill a world in and then I'll import it. It's been filling for an hour and I'm at ~0.7%. Fuck my life.

Well, then don't let Minecraft populate it. ;) But are you saying that you don't get buggy caverns and trees if you plaster the entire map with the Populate layer? Because that is not possible. Painting the entire map with Populate is EXACTLY the same as checking "allow Minecraft to populate the entire map", there is absolutely zero difference.
