Changing playername above the head WHITOUT Spout? (But client-modification?)

Hey guys,
I'm making a server at the moment, which requires, that the playername above the player's head can be changed (via command or however). Now, I know that this is possible with Spout, but since I'll be using some mods on my server, I am not able to use Spout for it. Is there any way to do that by another client-modification plus the matching plugin?

but fro example if you change nick to notch it will also change ur skin to his skin

 

And what happens, when I change my name to a name, that's not registered on Minecraft.net?

Alright, since I tried Spout now but decided to rather use other client-mods, I'm pushing this one.. Is there anyone, who can make this? A kinda Bukkit-Client API? It would actually be enough to set Essentials nickname (set via /nick) above the player's head insted of the usual playername..

SpoutPluginAPI was made, because it doesn't exist in the Bukkit API, and requires a client modification.
If you feel like rewriting it all, go ahead, but Spoutcraft and SpoutPluginAPI already provide what you need.

 

I would use Spout, if I won't need serveral mods for that project.

 

What mods? The only thing you run with that, is SpoutPlugin on the server, and Spoutcraft as the client. It's not even hard to install... it's a few clicks. Our launcher does most of the work for you.

 

Yeah, I know what's needed for Spout. I need mods like "Mo' food and crops", several Flan-mods, "MoreStorage" etc.
