Ok so I set up my bukkit server without a problem, but as soon as I go to port forward I get this message:

Is this a bad thing? Is it still safe to port forward?

Also will port forwarding wreck my router or make my internet slow down?

If you do it right, it will not wreck your router or make your internet slow down. And that message is just telling you that by configuring your router manually, you run the risk of breaking it (although not irrevocably). Again though, only if you don't do it right.

The instructions here should get you on the right track.

    Thank you :)

Umm so I have to use this program to make a static ip?

If you can yes, make a static ip, you need a static ip if you want people to maintain their connection to you.

Making your IP static simply means that, rather than your computer pulling a DHCP address from the router (whichever of the 50-100 possible addresses the router can assign), the computer will tell the router which IP address it's going to use.

Because port forwarding relies on sending the packets to a specific IP address, the port forwarding will break if your computer's IP address changes. If you forward the port to 192.168.1.3, but your computer is set to DHCP and pulls another IP address, such as 192.168.1.4, your port forwarding will break. But if you set your computer's IP address statically within Windows (something outside of your router's DHCP range so you don't run into future IP address conflicts), it will always have that IP address and port forwarding will never break.

I didn't have to make a static ip before though, this is my second time prot forwarding this is a new router

Also are these changes on this computer only or do they edit anything on the router

You don't HAVE to make a static IP, but it will ensure things continue to work after your computer renews its DHCP lease.

The actual port forwarding is something that you would do within the router. Setting the computer to have a static IP address is something that would be done on the computer. You COULD do it from your router, if your router is able to allocate an IP address to a specific MAC address, but that's more complicated than you need to get.
