Hello, I run a small server which has little to no traffic. Despite this, the server will completely stop responding to anything (including console commands) for a brief period of time at unpredictable moments.

    OS: Windows 7 64x

    JAVA: Java Version "1.7.0_02"
    SE Runtime Environment (build 1.70_02-b13)

Java HotSpot 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode)
    WRAPPER: Hamachi

    CB VER: 1.0.1

    Plugins:
    -Citizennpcs
    -CreativeGates
    -Essentials
    -LoreTime
    -Multiverse-Core
    -PermissionsEx
    -World Edit
    -World Guard

I booted up the server and played until one of the random lag moments happen (they're annoyingly frequent), here's the log.

    And here's my specs:
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67 GHz 2.67 GHz
    RAM: 12.0 GB

I've checked my performance window while running the server (alongside an open minecraft client) and neither the CPU usage or Memory usage ever supersede 50%. I've attempted running the server as an administrator as well as giving the java process high priority. But I honestly doubt it's an over-loading problem. I've also updated my time to the time.windows.com server.

Unless you have other programs running as well, the above is the reason #1 for random lag spikes. Running the client and a server of Minecraft on the same machine seems to cause problems, despite your system telling you CPU and RAM etc. should be fine.

"Server can't keep up" isn't the server becoming irresponsive, it is strictly an issue with lag. This happens a) you aren't running on a lot of RAM or memory b) you are running to many applications while running your server at home (I suggest using a hosting company) c) your CPU goes up do to using plugins like CreativeGates when going through portals.

I'm going to bump this, because I'm basically having the same problem.

    A) I dedicated 4 gigs to the minecraft server, that should be enough, right?
B)I wish I could afford a hosting company, but sadly can't. I keep my running programs down to a minimum while running the server and playing on it.
    C) I only have 8 plugins on my server, and most are low-cost.

The odd thing is: I never had a problem prior to 1.1. This seems to be a new development.

Any other ideas? It's really starting to get frustrating.

    HoboNoah

I don't think a Hosting Company is necessary, again, the server itself isn't using a lot of Memory or CPU.
java.exe Averages on 1.50 % CPU usage, and 750,500 KB of Memory. I think a better solution here would be to allocate more priority to the server itself.
    http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/assigning-more-ram-to-a-server-guide.1432/ <- This Details That.
I'll just see how that goes.

So it's time for a Bump.
To those of you who're also having these problems, I'm sorry but I haven't found any solutions.
Allocating more CPU and Memory to my server has no results. And now I'm getting another annoying symptom.
Occasionally the server will all-out just freeze. Entering commands in the console won't register (as they wouldn't whenever I got a lag-spike), and I'd find myself waiting over 30 minutes for the server to respond. To add to that, I obviously can't use the "stop" command, but closing the console window doesn't do anything either. I've also tried shutting it down via Task Manager, I've tried ending the process and I've tried taskkilling java.exe, and it still stays up there. Even more concerning, when I attempt a safe reboot, as in hitting start, then hitting "restart". It'll lock up on the "Shutting Down" phase and simply sit there. I wind up having to hard-boot, which seemed to be the only solution.

So yeah, if anyone thinks they have a solution it'd be nice if you could share it. I can't afford hosting and I see no reason for Task Manager's Performance monitor to utterly fail at it's job.
