Today marks what could possibly be the largest protest across the internet to date. Many people have banded together to show their dislike and support against the SOPA and PIPA legislation and other bills like it.

I think I can speak for the team that we strongly disagree with such archaic limitations of our freedoms. So why aren't we protesting or blacking out bukkit.org?

Simple. We feel that we'd be preaching to the choir. Our community is filled with technically informed individuals who have probably already heard of the crisis a hundred times over. A small site like ours going black would achieve little other than causing an inconvenience for everyone. Larger sites like Google, Wikipedia and the like are already sending the message out there loud and clear and are the ones who can really make a difference.

While the current legislation mostly affects Americans, there are similar bills attempting to be passed in Europe and other areas of the world. As a result, while we feel that a blackout is not necessary, we urge everyone to read up on SOPA, PIPA and similar bills to educate themselves and do what is necessary to stop them from being passed.

For more information on SOPA and PIPA and why it is a threat to the internet and our freedoms, please see the following sites and/or watch the following videos:

samp20 I agree with everything you said there, that was a good example. I just think violent isn't the right word. I think it is just simply wrong.

po5 Seriously, saying "If you dont do as it tells you, it gets violent. You basically get dragged to jail or killed." is a tad overreacting. Yes you can be 'killed' but only in extreme cases of murder and such. I, and everyone else here I presume, is talking about acts that can threaten our right to free speech and big corporations taking little companies out of the competition. You make the government sound savage. In reality, most of them live in massive houses and never actually think about consequences for the rest of the world.

Thanks for not blocking Bukkit. I've had enough of SOPA over the last two days. First Wikipedia was blacked out, then Reddit; endless talk about how SOPA will destroy us all..... I'm sick of it.

it will. and this statement is going to sound overreacting, but its pretty damn near the truth.

almost every single website that is community based in any way will be legal to be shut down by this bill. you can't go to like, ANY community based website (bukkit, facebook, youtube, reddit, digg, tumblr) without seeing copyright material SOMEWHERE. it needs to be shown that we DO NOT want this bill passed, unless you want that stuff taken down.

Considering a lot of websites like reddit, youtube, facebook are all based in the US, if they are shut down no one in the world can access them. Also, keep in mind that a lot of countries have legislation like this queried in their own agendas.

I wrote a hand written letter back to my Senator and never got a response. Going to send another bunch to both the house reps and senators tomorrow.

To my fellow non Americans that think this is just a yank problem.
The US domain problem aside, the western political world still looks up to the US and uses them as an example of how to conduct themselves. If the US takes on such legislation it gives the green light to every other country with a westernized culture.
I mean I'm from Australia and any old troll know that the Australian government has already proposed an nation wide internet filter. If the US adopts web censorship legislation that gives the nutbag righties over here a solid precedent to start that shit up again and possibly succeed.
America may be a shade of it's former glory but don't underestimate the US'es still immense influence in the western political world.

    You overestimate that influence.
Except for Geert Wilders and his one-topic anti-muslim 'Party for (his personal) Freedom (at the cost of others)', the other political parties and about anyone I know in RL here in the Netherlands looks down at the US, as example for how to not do things.
Note we have nothing against the people, I'm only talking about the US juridistical system, penal system, health care and election system.

The post-WWII 'adoration' of anything from the other side of the ocean has passed (blame the demise of the sovjet union and the ressurection of our research capabilities.

  20. Well, I'm from Austria and that's not as simple as you think it is.

Not every Country there is has a Judicature which sports precedence. Most Countries use positivism which simply states that Laws decide not other Courts. But of course there will always be the one politician in every country that digs up every bad legal bill he can find and tries to push it trough but luckily they are harmless most of the time (because they are either known for their bad ideas or are member of an political marginal group)

So, at least in Europe we are lucky because things like SOPA/PIPA are not possible but we have to fight other Things like Vorratsdatenspeicherung (Telecommunications data retention) which simply states that everything you do with an modern device will be monitored and held against you if there is a slight chance of you being suspicious. It's like flying to america with an opened bottle of water :)

The whole Problem started with ICANN - the Organisation that is much likely the Internet Government and the Fact that it is based in America. So it has to follow American Legislature/Judicature.

We all agree that the Internet is not an American only Business - so I think I don't have to point out the Problem here.

If ICANN (or any other Internet Regulation Organisation) were based in let's say Switzerland, or any other Country. Or even in many other Countries the Problem would not be as dramatic as it has now become. Because if the American Government decides to remove some DNS Entries (and thus make the according Website invisible to many People) or even worse blocks the IP Address (which also may effect many other Users because a standard ISP Practice is to IP Swap to save IP Addresses) it's just a matter of an judicial Decision.

It's like getting ones Driving License removed - when you're the only driver you're whole family has to stay at home.

The only Answer to SOPA/PIPA is first - divide ICANN into localized Branches and make Worldwide equal facilities. So that the Management over TLD,DNS is not a American only thing.

And after that there needs to be a new Internet with an Decentralized System Architecture like Peer-to-peer. And now would be also the right time to do this because we have to migrate to IPv6 anyways.

I must say that I had to laugh out loud because of the irony as I first heard about SOPA/PIPA. It must be something with the Americans that they tend to maniacally try to fix the world were they think something goes wrong but then they turn around and do the same thing to their own people and country.
I remember watching the speech of, i don't know if it was clinton or bush - when china presented their "Great Firewall" :)

And for a Country that makes Christianity to it's Hobbyhorse it's funny that they don't seem to know what's actually written in the Holy book:

Yes, I agree, especially about the last part. Just in case, I'm building a nucelar missile launcher, in order to destroy every supporter of SOPA in the world. (including politicians) Then I'll hire a programmer to create a virus called "the creeper", that will destroy every computer containing information that supports SOPA. However, if sopa is accepted anyway, the US will be mysteriously replaced by a large hole. *hehe*

lets think of this: im at a concert of lady gaga or something. and i have my mobile phone to make a picture... and i upload it to the internet. that site will be blocked. but since everyone can do this on almost every website... than the mobile internet will be blocked or what? this is just the end of the word internet, those almost-dead-people that representing those corporations don't see the consequences they cause by blocking those things... trust me if they push this through,,, than i quess many people will die in the first months omg... (not by me of course)

If this goes through I wouldn't be surprised if a protest started up that suddenly got very violent. It's just such a big issue with huge implications.

    "How does SOPA work?"
    Simple, it doesnt.

If this goes through 1 of 2 things, or both, will happen. 1, a major increase of pirating. 2, secondary internet like networks will appear, though probably per country.

    NSDEP

Really I shutdown all my websites and redirected all of them to american censorship I shutdown my server(S) all which use bukkit I think I speak for everyone at nsdep as sick by this you make me want to call up the server admin and tell him to drop bukkit for failure of not even attempting protecting the freedoms of the worlds. Nonthing make me more sick then to see someone say oh it dont matter I'm some piece of trash that cant do anything. You build bukkit nobody in congress can do that. You build a service for people who run servers for users of minecraft. For every 100 bukkit users theres about 148 game servers for every 148 game servers there 180,000 users for every 180,000 users theres about 600,000 social media site accounts for every 600,000 social media accounts there is 1 million who read the posts made by those accounts. Dont you EVER say you cant do anything. I'd rather you preach to the choir so they can realize what matters. Some times it takes 100 people to convinces 1 person. Im sure there will be a third black out and I hope you make the right choice. Like nsdep has done nov 16 2011, jan 18 2012.
On behalf of NSDEP thank you for your service with bukkit. Some amazing things have been created and there will be more to come. I have sent a message to the creator of sopa via twitter I will let you know what I get back.

I've heard if this continues Google will do a complete blackout for the entire of the US. That'll really make people think. The reason Google are doing this is because it wouldn't be possible for them to operate in the US if this act was passed.
