What is the state of (dev-) Bukkit right now?

After the DMCA takedown everything seems so odd. I returned to plugin development back in May after finishing my study, but still to this day I'm not sure what state Bukkit is in. I continued on Spigot for that reason, because they were the only ones actively keeping the server updated. (?)

Should I go and keep my plugins up-to-date on Bukkit and clean up the dev.bukkit pages, or is that site legacy now? Many popular plugins weren't updated since 2015...

I'm just wondering how big of a community still actively use the dev.bukkit plugin index for finding the server-side mods of choice. I haven't been here in a while, and before I invest valueable dev-time into cleaning up the pages I want to make sure it's actually going to be seen.

Also hi! For those that didn't know I was back at work, I am. TrainCarts and many other of my plugins, also new ones, are being worked hard on.

Although some of the popular plugins are no longer being updated here, there are still new plugins being posted on bukkitdev and there are still people downloading those plugins (though, I have to admit, not are not as many as there were before the new BukkitDev update). I would say you should keep the pages up to date, as it should be easy to transfer the pages from spigot to bukkit, and visa versa. Also, since spigot accepts redirects for downloads, you can set it up so users download your files directly from bukkitdev, so you don't have to worry about updating the file for both sites.

@bergerkiller Was hoping that you would come back ;)
Community is still active, traincarts is still a plugin that is nice to have (personal opinion here :p)

Unifying the Spigot and Bukkit plugin pages would be nice. I still need to rewrite many pages, since they still contain outdated updates and contents from 4 years ago.

I'm more of a developer than a documenter, sadly my pages reflect that a lot.

I still do feel Bukkit should contain some way to download the servers that run Bukkit. The wiki doesn't even link to the spigot build tools page. Isn't it a bit weird to have a server modding community on a site that offers no means of installing what is modded?

I eventually click into how can I get it and it basically tells me to go away, nothing to see here!

@bergerkiller Was done that way to keep safe with the DMCA and people complaining about it.
Alternative is there though (last line of the block)

I understand that its impossible to host the builds (although some sites challenge this). I was more suggesting to include a basic step guide for using the build tools, or linking to the build tools step guide on the wiki. Or even go there directly when you click on "get craftbukkit", instead of landing on a no-mans-zone page.

Even if all activity is on Spigot, Bukkit is still a good place to discuss the Bukkit API and plugin development in general. I don't see much of an issue linking to Spigot for the server implementations. Unless there is a feud I dont know about :)

No feud as far as I know, but no contact either, I personally appreciate what they are doing. And the feedback that you just gave.
We don't like linking those sites that challenge the DMCA though so please don't do that.
Updated the wiki, could you look at it again?

The added link is a step in the right direction. I disagree with the hardline "YOU CANT" on the first line, though. Perhaps weaken it a bit and say "To comply with DMCA law no direct download link to the server is available. However, you can build it yourself using the Build Tools provided by SpigotMC". After all its "get craftbukkit", not download per-se.

Also note that some portions on the page are outdated, such as the part about beta/development builds. But perhaps it also applies to plugins.

I actually don't trust download mirrors of the servers myself. It's too easy to make minor modifications or include adware. While this is 'secure Java', the security manager is inactive and rogue server software can easily spy or interfere with other services running on the machine. In that way, I'm glad there is a build-it-yourself solution.

Oh and one very small correction may be needed. On the setting up a server page it refers to "download CraftBukkit". This is now impossible, it would be better to say "Get CraftBukkit(.jar?)".

EDIT by Moderator: merged posts, please use the edit button instead of double posting.

EDIT by bergerkiller: quick changes! I'm sure this will help people out, especially those not so tech-savvy to figure out what build tools even are. Also sorry for the double-posting, bad habit
