    Staff Update - July 1, 2013:
This thread is not from 2013. This thread is about the 2011, BETA version of Minecraft 1.6. There is no ETA for the 2013 Minecraft 1.6 update, as always. Please do not ask staff about when an update will happen, as they have no estimate for you. Again, this thread is not relevant to today's update.

    Update 2 - June 23, 2011 at 9:12PM EST:
    New Recommended Build #928.

This Recommended Build addresses a few API issues and provides Plugin Developers with more events to work with, allowing more awesome plugins to be made. Unfortunately, this new RB WILL break some plugins (mostly plugins that deal with controlling a player's movement - details can be found near the end of this announcement). As always, please be sure to backup your server before updating just in case!

See this post for more information.

    Update - May 30th, 2011 at 5:55PM EST:
Since the release of Minecraft 1.6, we've seen quite a few rapid-fire bugfix updates from Mojang addressing issues the community has noticed and reported back on. While we're glad Mojang are on top of things and getting updates out there quickly to improve the community's experience, this does result in extra work on our part since we have to re-do some of the work we've completed for the previous update. As a result, I made the decision to hold off on getting a build out for Minecraft 1.6 until we were able to evaluate the update and decide if that is what we feel we should do or not.

Over the weekend, that is what we have been busy doing. Unfortunately, I was out of town and unable to handle the situation as much as I would have liked, leading to a lack of communication on our part with you guys, our community. Nevertheless, my team was happily and diligently working on the update and in regular contact with me. Still, I would like to apologise for our lack of communication, I simply was not in a position to do so.

That being said, we have noticed a few issues with the update that we've been able to address, so we are leaning towards bringing out a build for Minecraft 1.6.5. Though this build may not address all the issues we've found, it is still usable and produces a playable server with a decent experience. However, I am not yet sure if this build will qualify for recommendation.

Please bear this in mind when using the build: it is not fully supported (though we welcome detailed, useful bug reports) and not recommended (we can't guarantee stability) to use. There are some Minecraft vanilla issues that Mojang need to address that are beyond the scope of our project to fix and we are still touching things up (like Nether/multiworld support).

If you want to use the build we'll be pushing soon, please backup your server and make sure you understand the risks before doing so. Once again, we cannot guarantee that it won't eat your cake or spawn tiny creeper babies that take over your world.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I'm sure we're all aware, Mojang released Minecraft 1.6 today (Thursday, May 26, 2011) around 5AM EST and we've been hard at work getting a build out that is compatible with Minecraft 1.6 out. Since the release, Minecraft has seen quite a few small bugfix updates addressing some unnoticed bugs and we've pretty easily kept up with them. Unfortunately, there appear to be some issues with the update that is making the game unplayable for SMP players, so we've decided to wait for a bugfix update before we recommend any builds.

Will there be a CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.6?
Given the reports of showstopping bugs present in 1.6, there's a high chance a new bugfix update for Minecraft will be out tomorrow or even several times this week. As a result, it is unlikely we will be releasing a Recommended Build for 1.6 until we have something stable to work with.

That being said, we recommend everyone stay on 1.5 for a while until the showstopping issues are fixed and we can get a new, stable, compatible build out.

You can already get CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.6.4, but it is unsupported and not recommended.

I'll be scouring the internet for further reports on how Minecraft 1.6 is performing, but preliminary research and our own testing has revealed it as unplayable due to chunks sporadically loading or not loading.

Warning, long post, I advise to skip to the final paragraph for most of you.
One, I said the people whining, not everyone, about the bugs aimlessly and for poor reasons, as you just stated and help proved to me.
You can debate all you want, the point is still valid and remains, Minecraft is incomplete and you are playing it ahead of time instead of waiting for the Final Release, which you've already paid for.
You are playing the incomplete version of the game of your own free will, so you have given up the right to complain about bugs. Beta or Alpha, it does not matter. Do not try to be picky about something as pointless as that. There's going to be bugs, as simple as that. Whatever point you're trying to make, Beta or Alpha, is redundant and pointless. You missed my point and spent two paragraphs speaking to yourself; the game is incomplete, there will be bugs.
Also, did I say say every single big corporation? No, I did not, you again vaguely smear my words as you did before. I specifically said corporations like the ones who release horribly buggy and rushed games to the masses for everyone to eat up, and who only patch half the bugs at a time. Sometimes a game is so unfinished that it's literally unplayable, and it doesn't even get a patch later on.
Unfortunately for you, there's no reason for you to say any of that.
What more could Notch have done for this patch? Test it? Oh, that's right, we're the testers.
Should he have made less bugs appear in the patch? Oh, because he's doing it on purpose. This is the part I really think everyone loves to ignore, so let me put it in plain sight:
You can't predict all of the bugs, else they wouldn't be bugs in the first place. He's not doing it for kicks and giggles, he's trying to improve the game as everyone demands and now he's being put as the blame whenever a person feels they don't get what they think they deserve. And unless you've got access to the source code and know exactly what's going on, refrain from judging if the bugs were easily fixable before hand or not, please.
Notch has done nothing wrong or different. It's a Beta/Alpha/Takeyourpick for crying out loud, it's incomplete. You can't expect it to act like a complete game.
Oh, and let's not forget every single Minecraft player always pushing for the next update, that certainly kinda makes things more difficult and much more prone to any likely hood of being rushed, so we also bring it upon ourselves.
Stop making a big pile of crap out of nothing, and stop acting like they're already a big company with a finished game. You seem to enjoy ignoring the fact that this is a small company with a incomplete indie game. And if you've read about updates from even before today, previous patchs have been even worse than this, so what's this bullcrap that 'What is happening with today's release undermines people's belief that they are serious about getting serious.'? Minecraft's been ever getting more and more popular, contrary to that kind of logic, else why didn't people just give up on them on the past several hitches?

Maybe it's because people aren't looking for 'professionalism', and they're not being stupid, they realize this is an incomplete game but are still enjoying it and can wait patiently for the final release, unlike some of you.
Okay, no, you're dead wrong on the first sentence already.
People are not 'expressing doubts', they're simply posting 'oh my god Notch needs to test this before he makes everything worse', which is sorta what we're suppose to do. People are slamming Mojang for doing what they're suppose to do to progress, what they've been doing this entire time, which is release something to get tested and improved so we can have a working 1.6. Notch having us all test it greatly speeds up the process and eliminates the possibility of future bugs because computers of every conceivable sort are playing, instead of just the few he'd test them on. Several million people will test the game at a million more angles than Notch would ever reach by himself.
There are people being stupid and dumb, there are people whining, not 'expressing their doubts', and those are who I'm replying to. And playing a Beta Alpha Incomplete game while complaining about it's bugs certainly falls under whining.
Have you even viewed Minecraft's progress so far, from the very beginning, I mean, or are you just babbling stuff now?I cannot say for sure that they will be fixed and ready for the final release when it comes, but after seeing how well Minecraft has been going so far, enough to make you all appear here in the first place, I like to have a little faith instead of complaining over the first update. There's really nothing to do but wait. 'Express your doubts' all you want, but it won't do anything, you're as useless as annoying. Notch has even listed in the disclaimer that the product always has the possibility of ending for some reason, he's being a lot more professional than you are. The game will reach it's final stage, either complete or thrown in the bin, wither you like it's professionalism or not. But let me tell you one thing, this 'unprofessional and bad patch', is a sign of progress. There will be more updates to fix these and more, it's already been proven before, we're just telling Notch what to fix, as we always have. Such a winning formula has gotten us very far so far, and that's very far indeed.
Also, are you comparing Minecraft to Gmail, of Google? Are you even listening to yourself now? This is a single person who developed a game that everyone liked so much he was able to make a small company, with employees in the single digits, and you're comparing them to Google? Of course they're going to be vastly different, you'd have to be blind to not see that.
I sincerely doubt you're all waiting for an 'increase in professionalism'. Maybe you specifically are, for some odd reason, but the rest of the people I was referring to were just complaining because their game broke. So please, don't step up for no reason and broach your own feelings as if they're everyone's.
And let me tell you, professionalism doesn't mean a game is going to get complete. It might mean it'll look better as it gets there, but it'll also look professional right before it goes down the drain as well. It sorta doesn't matter, as Minecraft's already proven before hand. It may not be complete, but it's already one of the most popular games before it's even at it's final product. It's gotten this far without it, apparently, and it's already been through several hurdles such as this. There isn't a single thing that shows it's even close to stopping yet {As before, patches have been bad, and they've been fixed, and Minecraft progresses as usual. 'Professionalism' is invalid, for the previously stated reasons}, and several signs to show it's going to keep going, so don't preach doomsday for no reason, please.

Please read everything I say, instead of only select parts, else you'd've read this and known you just typed three paragraphs of crap.
I was not defending any of the crap you came up with on your post.
Please read everything before you post.
No, we don't have to tell you about the software industry, but apparently people need to read things for you because you're so incredibly good at missing things in bold print.
You keep preaching that you paid for a piece of crap Beta. That means you're either good at selective memory, or you can't read for crap and missed the part in the disclaimer when you bought it saying you only bought what was done {which you weren't complaining about and loved apparently} and the final product. See the rest of the text below if you want, but it only further proves you're preaching bullshit right now, buddy, make sure you understand and read everything first.
You didn't pay for this update {See below}, you are not even entitled to it, you cannot complain about something you didn't pay for.

Hey, uh, please read everything instead of only half of it.
You did not pay for the Beta, you paid for the Final Release and what was done at the time. Infact, not only does the disclaimer say that, you know the part where you get the updates for free? Removed.
You are not even entitled to this update.
You paid for the working Beta you've enjoyed, and the Final Product. That's it. That is all you are entitled to.
That removes any right you have to complain. Mojang has the responsibility of making a finished product, that is all. No where ANYWHERE does it say the updates have to be pretty, it no longer even says that you get them for free.
You're asking for something you don't even deserve.
Wait for the final product at least.

And just to make this clear to everyone.
No one here, not a single person, has any right beyond their own poor logic to complain about this update.
According to the disclaimer that you agreed to, Everyone Here Did Not Pay For This Update. {The part about getting the updates guaranteed for free, was again, removed} It is not yours to own, you have no right to it, Notch has given it to you of his own free will while you wait for the Final Product that you paid for.
What you did pay for is The Beta As It Was When You Bought It, and The Final Product.
If there's something wrong with those, go ahead, complain a bit, you do have some right there.
Otherwise, shut the hell up, you are not even legally allowed to complain. Whatever bullshit little reason you want to come up with can go to hell, because you are not even entitled or deserve this update, it is not even yours. Half the time your reasons are bullshit anyways because you have selective reading skills or whatever, but that's besides the point.
Later, you can enjoy what is yours, the Final Product, bug free. For now, shut up and enjoy what is yours, the working Beta, the one that isn't using the patch you didn't pay for.
And if you want to reply to this, bloody well read Minecraft's disclaimer first, and make sure it's up to date. And while you're at it, read everything I said first as well. All of it, not just half.

Saying Minecraft is Beta, it's not an excuse for me.

Btw, I bought this game during alpha, and everyone who did are entitled all future updates of minecraft.

"We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise." - Notch

Hey guys. Not that I don't think Mojangs updating ways are poor, just I told everyone who wants to play on my server not to update until we give them the go ahead. Our server is still on 1.5_02 and just as populated as before. Seriously, although you have the right to complain, find yourself some 1.5 files and you can play fine until 1.6 is sorted. Everyone's playing just as before.

interesting. I legally own an End User Licence Agreement (EULA) with Mojang. It is confirmed when I login. So by me sharing the file, I am breaking copy right law? I m not providing a cracked copy or anything, just a legal back up to other users who have a legal EULA.

Another fun part in this debate. Since I am in Canada and we pay a tax for every blank cd or dvd we purchase and since that tax is distributed to artists and programmers through Slocan, under Canadian law I can share any file I want as long as I copy it on a blank cd and dvd. Its a funny and stupid loophole they are trying to fix. But thats why no Canadian has recently been found guilty of sharing files.

So I would not worry too much in providing a 1.5 jar file - as I did on page 7 of this post - to other users who do have a legal EULA with Mojang.

Reading this thread might have people believe it's absolutely impossible to run 1.6.4 and Bukkit on your server. I just want to point out that since one of us just updated I decided to do a complete backup, update and see if the problems really are as bad as everyone's saying.

Not really. Yes the 1.6.4 CPU usage on my MBP is higher than on 1.5.2, but the server is fine and so far (no nether portals built yet) everything's running smoothly - including the map I just created and explored out to the edges.

    Minecraft: 1.6.4
    Bukkit: 814

In your 'rant' here you go on about how developers classify software as beta to avoid responsibility for bugs, the most notable of which is GMAIL, you then compare minecraft (in a actual beta stage WITH BUGS) to a falsely labelled BETA product, GMAIL. WE are the BETA TESTERS, they DO DO internal testing, when they think that have something that's stable, they release, the community (and its hundreds of thousands of different setups) then finds MORE BUGS which they promptly try to fix asap. they released 4 incremental updates to fix community found bugs after the initial 1.6 release (hence 1.6.4). You cannot compare minecraft to a full v1.0 release of a game in terms of stability until minecraft is out of beta (hence the warranted beta label). If you are upset with the current status of the game DON'T FUCKING PLAY IT! Bitching about how buggy a beta game is on a form (which isn't even the form for the game, just a independent mod FOR the game) is VERY noobish. If you want a 'proper arc of increasing professionalism' go join the PSN and get screwed over like the rest of the asshats. If your bought a beta game expecting anything more than something that has bugs and issues, then I'm a Nigerian Prince and need your financial help in obtaining my fortune from a bank account my father accidently 'forgot' to put my name on!

protip: they didn't miss really small, hard to find bugs. They missed bugs the size of notches wallet, such as the fact CHUNKS DO NOT LOAD on SMP. and oh yeah, try crafting a map on an SMP server. Automatic crash. To miss something like this while testing, you'd have to be blind. Seriously, load up SMP and craft a map. Real solid coding and testing, bro.

also, lol @ vulgarity. Calm down kid, get off the computer in the library and go back to class. Look at the post above mine, and look at the person you are so dearly defending. He's not concerned with end users, rigorous testing, quality code or actually running a "business". Anyone remember when the login system was down for a week, and notch just kept talking about how cool the new nerf guns his office just got were? The dude is a joke. If they handed the project off to quality coders who actually have heart embedded in what they're doing, like the Bukkit team, we'd be at minecraft v12.3 by now.

@Fohdeesha It's not the bugs that bother me, personally, it's the fact that now they're sitting around playing Terraria. Bugs (even giant, seemingly obvious ones) happen; it's really really hard to test your own code sometimes. The important part is that you actually fix them as soon as possible.

I (and I suspect HOPE most other developers) would be out of a job pretty quickly if I released super buggy code to production and then said "I'm going to take a day off to play video games, alright boss?" That's just ridiculous.

If you release buggy code, you man up and fix it. Priority number one. Everything else can wait.

    <rant>
i think your confused about what a 'final release' is, as of yet minecraft has not released a 'final release' thats slated (tenitivly) for 11/11/11, until they release a 'final release / v1.0 / non-beta / whatever you want to call it' it is nothing more than a beta build designed to let you see the evolution and progress of the game. If you are not happy with its current playability, i suggest you wait until your 'pre-order' can be filled with the 'final release' when it ships. If you are not willing to beta test (that is one the purpose of these releases after all) then step back, play some portal 2, drink a beer, and wait.... just like every one else...

As a side note company's regularly release products that are nearly un-playabale even in v1.0 - non beta - look at the original black-op's game, the lag was sooo horrible you couldnt play online _at all_ if you reply that 'hey atleast they have single player' well guess what, so do you. Sit Down, Shut Up, and Stop Bitching until v1.0 comes out. If the major bugs that make the game 'un-playable' are still there then you can bitch. Have you even tested 1.6.4 yet? I've seen some pretty playable servers already up on this 'un-playable' game, which leads me to beleive either you havent tested it yet (and as such have NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT) or your doing something wrong. </rant>
