Plugin Authors: How to hook into Permissions

Permissions 2.x is being discontinued! 3.0 can be found HERE!!!

I am discontinuing Permissions 2.x and leaving the project. Permissions is not going away though! Since 2.6 I have been working closely with another developer and added them to the team. For the past several version they have not only been assisting with 2.x but also doing a lot of the development of much anticipated 3.x. rcjrrjcr will be taking over as lead developer of Permissions from 3.x forward. I have full faith in them and after working closely with them on the development on the last few version and the next major version I feel that I am leaving this project in more than capable hands. I put way to much work into this project to just leave it with anyone, and this is one of the few programs that I am incredibly proud of.

Many people will probably wonder why I am leaving again after taking over the project just a few months ago. I could quote drama and headaches, of which there were quite a few with this project. Unfortunately real life happens. Many people already know that I have been having medical issues here lately. Unfortunately while they have gotten better, they have not gone away. This coupled with other real life commitments, going to school full time, and starting up my own company, I am currently in the process of being laid off from work. At this point I have so much stuff going on in my life and am being pulled in so many directions that I am not able to get any work done on anything. This has lead to me missing commitments and letting people down on multiple things.

Permissions is also a very high maintenance plugin that requires a lot of attention and time. Right now I am not able to devote that time and do not feel it is fair for me to try to continue to be the lead developer on it. I had originally thought that adding other members to the team would be helpful, but unfortunately this just lead to frustration for them and myself as I just was not able to commit to the project enough. Hence, 3.0 has been rewritten almost exclusively by rcjrrjcr with minimal contributions by myself.

At this point I will be stepping away from the project to focus more on real life and to try to free up some time for other projects and to work with more individual like the wonderful HeroCraft Coding team to fulfill some commitments that I made to them a long time ago and sadly did not come through on. I feel that this is the best for all involved, both myself and the other Permissions developers, as well as the community who deserve someone who can contribute more time and attention to them and supporting them. I do not want to see Permissions end up like many other plugins with an absentee programmer and just slowly wasting away from a great plugin with a lot of potential to a headache with no support.

I will still be active in the community, just not as much as not in the same way. I'm sure my server will be more than happy to have their head admin back and active again as well.

    Thank you and happy gaming.

      • Fix for small subtle bug introduced in last minor version.
    • 2.7.1
      • Commit by DThielke to fix several bugs with programmatic modifications of user permissions.
    • 2.7
      • Further commits by rcjrrjcr

        • Temp fix for NULL issue
        • WorldConfigurationModification to save only modified configs
        • Fix for cache problems
    • 2.6
      • Pulled in commits by rcjrrjcr
      • Fixed versioning. Last version should have technically been 2.6
      • Fixed invalid config file being written
      • Fixed erroneous conversion message.
    • 2.5.5
      • Updated to be compliant with CB600+
      • Further Maven Integration and Autobuilding
      • Better handling of configuration file errors.
        • If you do not have a world config file for the default world at startup it will now look for config.yml
        • If it cannot find that it will look for world.yml instead in case you named it that when that is not what is in level-name:
        • It will rewrite the config file to be the proper name. At this time it does not delete the old one though.
      • Removed defunct public abstract calls. If your not using the right one by now you should be shot anyway.
    • 2.5.4
        • Added Command aliases for perms and pr
        • Changed the way directories are handled.
        • Stopped it from creating an empty <world>.yml file in base directory

    • 2.5.3
      • Change from File.pathSeparator to File.separator to fix multiworld perms
    • 2.5.2
      • Added more instructions to the included config file within the plugin
      • Added a check that will use the default world permissions if a world specific config file cannot be found.
      • Added a function to get only the group that a player is assigned to without checking for group inheritance.
      • Added a change to colorize() to fix it hopefully not adding an extra unneeded ascii character and thus creating a linebreak/color switch issue
      • Removed permissions.info as it was not needed and was a artifact of testing I was doing.
    • 2.5.1
      • Fixed a bug that could cause a group to be returned as null for getGroups()
    • 2.5
      • Added in AntiBuild functionality to Permissions
      • Minor code tweaks
      • Added getGroups(world, player) to PermissionHandler so that plugins can call it to get all of a users groups
      • Fixed the inability to use the permissions -reload all command from within the console. I still need to do some more work on this as it doesn't seem to like to accept anything other than all from console.
    • 2.4
      • Refactored namespaces to keep in line with Java & Bukkit policy
        • This was cancelled as it ended up being not needed
      • Fixed setupPermissions()
    • 2.3
      • Undid removal of some code that I had overzealously purged during cleanup
      • Merged in last of Nijikokun's changes
      • Re-ordered the main class to attempt to fix the problems with Plugin API
    • 2.2
      • Developer change
      • Fixed reloading of configuration files
      • Moved commands to registering with plugin.yml
      • Commands now use onCommand instead of onPlayerCommand
      • Command is now /permissions instead of /pr

Did you just download Permissions? If so, you'll want to download the zip file rather than the jar file. The jars are only for updating/downgrading.

Otherwise, just ignore the permissionsworld.yml file.

I just did a completely new folder install of bukkit and the only thing I added was permissions, I tried a run without changing anything, then I did a stop and changed the RENAME-ME.yml to world.yml. Both times I get "Invalid config file found and converted to proper name/format."

    You should o.o
Try putting yourself as OP. That should ensure you get those permissions.

I know people say not to OP, but I'm pretty sure those are commands from the non-bukkit version of a Minecraft* server, so unless you have a plugin that uses those commands, then nothing changes who gets them other than OPing someone. Just make sure you pay attention to what plugins go for OPS.txt over permissions, which some do :p

*I keep saying this, and I am right about this, right? I'm not just spewing hugabaloo everywhere?

    Celtic Minstrel

I'm not sure the exact cause of the error, but the better solution would be to put the group name in quotes, so like this:
    Code:
    "[Snivvian]ColdSoul":
You'll need to do that for everything that contains brackets. Obviously the colon is only needed if it's already there.

This form needs to have commas between the elements.

In fact, the hyphens do not need to be indented any further than the key; it is typically done to make it more clear, but it's not necessary. The following random YAML is perfectly valid:
    Code:
    test:
    - 1
    - 2
    - 3
    Um, upgrade to 2.5.5?

Yes, these commands are provided by the default vanilla server and are strictly limited to ops. Plugins can override them with their own versions, though. Also, my DefaultPermissions plugin lets you give permission to use them to non-ops (though it's still kinda glitchy).

  15. Offline

    fightknight

ok so I need plugins! gotcha! :D
I want to stay away from the op file so I can get a handle on this permissions thing :) Any suggestions? I've learned the hard way not to just search and grab, I end up spending to much time learning a plug in that, then I find out there is one that does it better LOL any suggestions? cause atm my toon can't build, destroy or do anything but walk around LOL

(La de da, snipped out what I don't neeeed...)

@ bracket problem: Quotes, gotcha. I think it worked, so my diagnosis is roughly accurate. Maybe :B

@ Commas: It was close enough? Kinda? It got the point across. I'll try to remember that, though!

@ Spacing for nodes: Again, something I didn't know. I won't go correcting people who do that, then.

@ Vanilla server: pffft you make me feel incompetent. I kinda knew all that, but it's good to have confirmation.

Should I be writing this all down? I think I should.

I'm afraid I can't suggest much, my plugin list is limited to MultiVerse, Permissions, and Colorsheep, and I run a private server where everyone gets all the commands, so there's no point in me not OPing everyone. XD
The best I can do is suggest DefaultCommands, which is what Celtic Minstrel just said s/he used.

    Hello,

Ok so I had the old permissions working just fine and now I am running a test server for the upgrade to 617 and permissions is throwing a fit over my config. I notice that the current build does not auto generate the file like is used to instead it generates a file in the plugin directory called Permissions******.yml where ****** is my world name. The file contains no information unlike the previous versions. As such to avoid errors I simply copied the contents of my old file over and even tried re-writing it by hand with no avail. All i get is mad spam of the BLOCK error that is listed as a bad config in the FAQ.

The old config file seemed to work fine so what has changed?

EDIT: started from scratch again and appears fine.

The Permissions******.yml file is a mistake on the plugin maker's part. Just ignore the file.

Huh.. I don't see anything immediately wrong with it o.o
But it's late, I'll try to remember to go over it tomorrow.

So I just downloaded permissions 2.5.5 for the first time on my new server and started my server with it loaded, but it doesn't create any file in the permissions folder. None, zit. Only the one file user Itssnowing says is mistake by the plugin developer that is empty.

So how the heck am I suppose to start the confic... just launch notepad and puke random code inside it off the top of my head?

What I'm trying to do is to have four groups.
    Owner - can do everything
Moderator - just about everything except server commands
User - Can place build and do what normal people do.
Scrub - Can just walk around the areas but cannot interact with the world.

edit: I managed to get it working by altering one of the codes pasted here.

Things to try if you think the permissions plugin works, but you cannot do anything. Or even if you're getting any error, they're good things to try. (in no real order, but all important):
    • http://yaml-online-parser.appspot.com/ < paste your yml file in there and and press ctrl+enter. Any errors, you've fucked up with spaces or have other formatting related problems like quotation marks or something. Cross check with the default yml file to see how it's done.
    • check you spelled your name right, have quotation marks where they need to be as per default file, don't have names with odd characters that may be a problem
    • hell, make sure the name of your yml file matches your world name, and that it's in the correct directory, and that the permissions plugin is loaded when you start the server. It's always a good idea to triple check the basics.
    • if you're confident there's nothing wrong with your world.yml, try replacing it with the default anyway. just change the admin name to your name.
    • You may have a rights issue - On linux, try chmod -R 777 /location/to/server/root , or alternatively running the server as root. Neither option is safe, but it's just to make sure it's not your rights that are causing anything.
    • Note on the above: Celtic Ministrel suggests chmodding to 664 instead (read his post on that a bit further down). I can't vouch if it has the exact same effect, but it's a safer option.
    • Default file and you're still not getting anywhere? Copy out all of your plugins to a different folder, except permissions, and try starting the server again.
    • Nothing? Update craftbukkit and permissions. chmod those now for good measure.
    • If you've not yet copied your other plugins back yet, you've basically just made a completely new server with the best files you can get. If it doesn't work at this point, you're shit out of luck (for now).
Once you're at that last bulletin, you may sigh and grab yourself a beer. I gave up at removing the user, adding a new one, creating a new directory, chowning, chmodding, redownloading all files, chowning, chmodding, and then not getting there >_> I'm at a loss for what else to try :p

Curious thing: If i have a bare server with cb617 and permissions, i can do permissions -reload all in console, and it will say it worked (though not reflect the changes, obviously, or I wouldn't be posting). If i have permissions and essentials installed, this happens:
    Code:
    >permissions -reload all
    10:34:22 [INFO] /permissions
10:34:22 [INFO] Example: /permissions | Displays Permissions Info
10:34:22 [INFO] Example: /permissions -reload all | Reloads the default world configuration
10:34:22 [INFO] Example: /permissions -reload [world] | Reloads the [world] configuration file

(Which didn't happen to me when permissions DID work)

As always, will report in if i learn anything.

Lol I'm totally lost. I set it up and all, but i have no idea what it actually does??
Where are the commands? Or is it just for other mods that use Permission?
Yeah, as you might suspect I'm a noob and i only want two groups, one guy just walking and building like in single player and one (me) that can abuse him with commands.
Also what about those permissions foo.bar, bar.foo and herp.derp and whatnot? are they somewhere detailed or are those just placeholders for other mods?

Please clarify and thanks in advance

There aren't many commands, I think they're limited to reloading permissions. However, they don't appear to be working at the moment.

What permissions does is limit the commands that other people can use- so you can give your builder some commands and give yourself others, and organize groups of people to have the same commands, etc.

foo.bar and bar.foo are placeholders, so you can take them out if you'd like, or just leave them, doesn't matter. They're just there to show you how to put things in.

If you give me yours and your's builder's Minecraft names, I could make a config file for you, if you'd like.

Hey guys, I'm hoping this is possible.

I currently am the only op/admin. I want to add a moderator, but only want him to have the ability to add/remove players from the whitelist.

How would I go about doing this? I already have Permissions installed.

    Thanks so much!
