Update (Oct 27 @ 10:24 PM EST): We've just pushed out our first CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.4.2 development build, see this post for more information.

    --------------------------

With the Minecraft 1.4 release date fast approaching, a lot of people are wondering when we will be releasing a CraftBukkit Recommended Build for Minecraft 1.4. We hope this short announcement will answer those questions.

Due to the rapid release of preview builds for the impending 1.4 update, we are unable to guarantee that we'll have a compatible CraftBukkit Recommended Build out in time for the release of Minecraft 1.4.2. Although we started working on the update immediately after the Minecraft 1.4 preview was made available to the public, each new preview build leads to delays in our update process as we, essentially, need to start over with each one.

In the past releasing a Recommended Build has caused apparent confusion within the community, as a result for this release, and moving forward, we will follow the "Dev -> Beta -> Recommended Build" release methodology. We are going to release a Beta build as soon as we can get a stable build devoid of any significant bugs.

As we have done a significant amount of important work on CraftBukkit 1.3.2 builds, we have promoted a new Recommended Build recently. This was done so that people have a reliable, stable build to use until we can get a 1.4 compatible build out and so that everyone who relies on Recommended Builds are able to take advantage of all the fixes, improvements and so on we've done since the last 1.3.2 RB.

Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support; we greatly appreciate it!

Will the folowing 1.3.2 plugins work on the latest 1.4.2 dev build:
    essentials
    world edit
    multiverse
    world guard

Most likely. You'll have to confirm for yourself. I'm positive some of the features of Multiverse will be nonfunctional due to a change in world generation.

Best idea would be for you to test it yourself. Make sure you make full backups if/before you do it. :)

    Did you see this...

Thanks so much to all those involved in updating Bukkit to 1.4. :D
I'll shortly be testing out the latest dev builds as they come out to check if enough plugins are still working to be able to run my server live as 1.4.

Along with plugin updates being needed a lot of people running a public server aren't going to update until a recommended build is released, I'm one of them. So effectively for those who want to ensure their server remains as stable as possible the turnaround time for 1.3.1 was a couple of weeks for the release plus whatever time you might have to wait for plugins. One good side effect of waiting for the RB, as well, is by that stage most active plugins have updated during the dev and beta phases of bukkit development. I've already told my users we won't be updating until a RB of bukkit is released, all the plugins are compatible -and- we've had a chance to do at least a bit of testing on our development server. Sadly the vast majority of users do not understand the first thing about bukkit and it is completely beyond them why we aren't updated already.

Well many of them are just VERY impatient as well. Personally I don't mind the wait for the releases, these guys do all that they can to get the releases out as quickly as possible. The only part about the wait that annoys me comes from users, some of whom I have had ask daily when 1.4.2 will be done despite being told that nobody knows the answer to that.

Exactly, I am willing to wait a week or two, heck ill wait a month if i have to in order to make sure that what they release Is tested, bug proof and ready for me to run my server on. Just be patient guys, it will be out soon!

Nice. Are we going to get a spreadsheet going in google docs for compatible plugins again. I really liked that last time. If so, let me know and i'll let you know how all of mine work. Thanks Bukkit.

P.S. My post is in reference to the Dev Build and the status of it.

Not nearly as many plugins broke this time, so it's not really necessary.

All my plugins seem to still be working with this, and i have yet to see any issues. some [SEVERE} stuff in the command console, but it isn't having any obvious effects.

cant wait for the full release :D

These builds are not for everyone. You really need to be an experienced server admin, know how to solve the problems, and know how to decipher a bug in CraftBukkit from a plugin error.

seriously though, as TNT said, development builds are not stable and are not for inexperienced operators. If you can't figure out how to download it, you probably shouldn't run it.

Mod edit: Removed all humor, because some people cannot tell the difference.

Hey EvilSeph, random idea. I read a post saying how after each snapshot your team effectively has to start development all over again right? Are you using source control for the minecraft.jar and other files? You might be able to use source control in order to identify changes instead of going thru the whole thing.

    Just a thought,
    --Alex.

P.S. Keep up the good work :) I love bukkit.

That's happening to everyone, I believe. Even with WorldGuard, users can destroy item frames.

Same with Grief Prevention. I guess the items don't exist in the plugins yet which is why they aren't protected?

I believe that they're technically entities, like paintings, so they wouldn't fall under 'block protection'.

I dont know if it is for 1.4.2 but most unupdated plugins are compatible with 1.3.2

It's because ItemFrame events haven't been implemented yet.
