Update (Oct 27 @ 10:24 PM EST): We've just pushed out our first CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.4.2 development build, see this post for more information.

    --------------------------

With the Minecraft 1.4 release date fast approaching, a lot of people are wondering when we will be releasing a CraftBukkit Recommended Build for Minecraft 1.4. We hope this short announcement will answer those questions.

Due to the rapid release of preview builds for the impending 1.4 update, we are unable to guarantee that we'll have a compatible CraftBukkit Recommended Build out in time for the release of Minecraft 1.4.2. Although we started working on the update immediately after the Minecraft 1.4 preview was made available to the public, each new preview build leads to delays in our update process as we, essentially, need to start over with each one.

In the past releasing a Recommended Build has caused apparent confusion within the community, as a result for this release, and moving forward, we will follow the "Dev -> Beta -> Recommended Build" release methodology. We are going to release a Beta build as soon as we can get a stable build devoid of any significant bugs.

As we have done a significant amount of important work on CraftBukkit 1.3.2 builds, we have promoted a new Recommended Build recently. This was done so that people have a reliable, stable build to use until we can get a 1.4 compatible build out and so that everyone who relies on Recommended Builds are able to take advantage of all the fixes, improvements and so on we've done since the last 1.3.2 RB.

Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support; we greatly appreciate it!

    Also my server.... Empty :-(

I would be great with somekind of "emergency" beta release of craftbukkit (if even possible?) - just an update that will let people get in on the server - a few crashes etc would be acceptabel, etc...... if just people could get in....

On that note, hoping for at beta build soon :)

Thanks for the great job u guys do ;-)

  3. If they had a pre release copy of mc1.4 how come the bukkit server isn't ready at the same time?
They are very fast at releasing new bukkit but seems weird that its not done in advance.
They have there ways i suppose. can't complain its free and has enabled millions to enjoy a better game.

Because you have no idea how this works, clearly. Minor versions are server-side fixes generally, such as optimisations, AI changes, etc, all of which are controlled server-side. Major versions add new assets, gameplay elements, etc, stuff that the server is not server-only.

If you keep up with the 1.4 pre-releases you will know that they put out the 1.4.2 update yesterday so despite the fact that bukkit did have the 1.4 early they did not have the 1.4.2 until yesterday so they had to start over again and work on a build against that. So it is either Mojang push the 1.4 release date back to allow more time for the 3rd party developers or release it.

As to why bukkit has to start over from scratch every time, I do not work for bukkit, but from everything I have read and remember and assuming things are still the same way. Because Minecraft doesn't have the modding API we are all wanting and because of the way that bukkit works. They cannot simply take Minecraft and add in the new code to make it bukkit. They have to derecompile the jar, and go to the source and basically rebuild the server.jar from scratch. This has been made faster and faster the more bukkit does it. I remember "back in the day" when it would almost take bukkit until the next release to come out to get a new version out for us, I am very happy that it now only take a few weeks at max. I also am glad that Mojang isn't updating as much and making the updates bigger from main version to main version. I am not 100% sure that I am right about that anymore but I do think that is the way it was in the past and assume it is the way it is now.

They also cannot start with 1.3.2 and add the new features from 1.4.2 because of all the changes/add-ons to the code. I seem to remember someone on the bukkit staff once saying that if they went that way it would take them two to three times as long as it does now to get even a semi-stable build out for the public.

I for one am happy with the work the bukkit team does and as I tell people that are on my server and complain about Mojan/Minecraft/bukkit. If you do not like it, go play another game no one is forcing you to play so just be happy with what we have.

Because one is a minor update. The other MAJOR. Small things change, big things change, respectively.

Just a reminder to people, this is NOT the place to be posting 1 line responses similar to 'yay I can't wait for it to be out, any ETA?'
Responses like that will be removed, so lets keep discussion on topic and productive.

    Thanks

The 1.4 client is incompatible with the current Bukkit stable build so advise your users through your websites etc to hold off on updating the client.

1.3 was bad. Surprisingly, we haven't had too much spam yet (or the mods are doing a good job).

And yet with out the support from Plugin devs, wrappers and bukkit they wouldn't be a multimillion dollar company now would they?

Wondering how much of a help the "pre releases" really are to Bukkit (and e.g. client modders),- if I remember correctly there have not been a single pre-release without changes before or right after release.

This is good news, I hope it comes soon, but like always, I'll wait.

  19. I really hope a first alpha version will be released today or tomorrow, because I got a LAN party with MineCraft competition this weekend in the Netherlands, and I'd LOVE to use all the new functionalities :D

So does this mean there is an unstable Dev build out? or one I can compile myself?

The 1.4 update is a large update. It will take some time, and yes, with 1.4.2 pre release just coming out it has caused the team to start over again. Mojang cannot hold back on important updates just because Bukkit needs to update.

The team is working hard to bring out an update.

Oh god. Not a 75 page thread again...

But, I just backed up my entire server, swapped out my CB.jar with a regular vanilla 1.4.2 server, and just told my users that we will be using Vanilla for about a week or so. They are having fun forming their own little groups and just pillaging each other! It's hilarious! But, anyways, Good luck to you and and the entire team Seph. I hope you guys don't have as rough of an experience as before.

And, remember. TAKE YOUR TIME. DON'T LISTEN TO THE COMMUNITY!

Good luck Bukkit team! Can't wait to utilize some of the new features in some plugins. I can honestly say that after looking at some of the Mojang code, you guys really do work miracles :)

    Have a look at https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MCAPI

I think you'll see from the scale of that that the API is a long time away - months I'd guestimate.
Also that's not really relevant to Bukkit ;) Tho' it does make me wonder if there will be a Bukkit-workbench bridge? ;)

well i figured they hired bukkit so that they can make the plug in api
in my opinion minecraft is moving more to a bukkit type api which in the long run looks like they will combine at one point...
